BA (Hons) Fine Art

I work primarily through the mediums of moving pictures, sound and installation, and combine all three where possible.

I’m interested in the stories of people’s lives, and the shifting subjectivity of memory. When I create art it is never to try and reproduce something I’ve seen: it is because I want to share something I’ve imagined or experienced in the hope that it triggers an emotional response.

My current work is a film and installation piece entitled ‘The Unheimlich’ after Psychologist Sigmund Freud’s 1919 essay of the same name. In it he describes incidents where a familiar everyday object or event is encountered in an unsettling or eerie context.

Two short films reveal strange ‘in between’ moments taken from vintage Super 8 footage of my family, filmed in mid-1970s, mostly by my father. The installation piece describes the aftermath of a domestic quarrel during the same period. To accompany the work I’ve created a sound piece, which includes layered and abstracted household sounds.

The work is all viewed through fish-eye ‘peep holes’ embedded in the walls of a white corridor. The walls represent tensions hidden behind closed doors, and the 180° lenses accentuate the distorted nature of the subject matter.

Rwy’n gweithio’n bennaf drwy gyfryngau darluniau byw, sain a gosodwaith, ac rwy’n cyfuno pob un o’r tri lle bynnag y bydd hynny’n bosib.

Rwy’n ymddiddori mewn straeon bywydau pobl a goddrychedd cyfnewidiol y cof. Pan fyddaf yn creu celfyddyd, ni fyddaf byth yn ceisio atgynhyrchu rhywbeth rwyf wedi’i weld: mae hyn am fy mod am rannu rhywbeth rwyf wedi’i ddychmygu neu wedi’i brofi gan obeithio ei fod yn ennyn ymateb emosiynol.

Gwaith ffilm a gosodwaith yw fy ngwaith presennol o’r enw ‘The Unheimlich’ ar ôl traethawd 1919 Sigmund Freud y seicolegydd o’r un enw. Yn y traethawd mae e’n disgrifio digwyddiadau lle y deuir ar draws digwyddiad neu wrthrych cyfarwydd bob dydd mewn cyd-destun annifyr neu iasol.

Bydd dwy ffilm fer yn dangos eiliadau rhyngol rhyfedd a gymerwyd o hen ffilmiau Super 8 o’m teulu a gafodd eu ffilmio yng nghanol y 1970au, gan amlaf gan fy nhad. Mae’r gosodwaith yn disgrifio canlyniad ffrae yn y cartref yn ystod yr un cyfnod. Rwyf wedi creu darn sain i gyd-fynd â’r gwaith sy’n cynnwys seiniau haenog a seiniau haniaethol o’r cartref.

Mae’r gwaith i gyd yn cael ei wylio drwy ‘dyllau sbïo’ ym muriau coridor gwyn. Mae’r muriau’n cynrychioli tensiynau y tu ôl i’r drysau caeedig ac mae’r lensys 180° yn pwysleisio natur wyrgam y pwnc.

We have never been so connected yet so alone. The internet has become integral to our daily lives, no element of our existence seems untouched by it. But have we been caught and paralysed in the web? We are constantly on display and exposed, yet anonymous. We seem to...

My work is currently exploring texture and abstraction, with acrylic paint being my main medium through the repetitive motion of building layers. I am presently experimenting with wallpaper and plaster, by layering through a variety of applications, such as sanding,...

I would describe my art as confessional; I take inspiration from my life events and feelings surrounding these experiences, I translate this through my work. I see my practice as a portal from my life in which I can lose myself and explore the deepest truths of my...

I have recently been exploring ideas related to the home and memory, and how they form identity. I am interested in how to defy the imperative to follow a linear structure in personal narrative and instead look for a more honest depiction of memory, which is itself...
