The purpose of my making is in response to mass produced, disposable eating utensils and the increasingly fast and virtual world we are living in which I believe is ruining our precious time with loved ones. Through my studies, my attention turned from sculpture to tableware since attending culture trips to Asia where my interest in social eating developed. Visual elements of my previous years of study have crept through which make the work borderline sculptural and functional tableware. I wanted to enhance the experience of an eating environment in Western cultures, which drove me to construct contemporary tableware using traditional methods of making I have learned from China and South Korea. I want to change how we interact with the objects we use at the table and also alter the way we interact with each other. The philosophy of Wabi-Sabi has greatly influenced my designs. To enrich an environment I have a desire to create forms that are irregular and I have an appreciation for the imperfect. There is a strong sense of individuality that shows from these pieces which have been created by my hands. My objectives were to make objects to provoke the handler in an intimate and sensual way. The slow process of making involved slab-building, coil-building and pinching. The forms describe how my hands sculpted the clay and they replicate the landscape of the human body. The glazes I’ve used show a unique fantasy quality with the fleshy coloured tones to represent the body and liquid residue. The earth is my medium. My hands are my tools.

Mae elfennau gweledol o’m blynyddoedd blaenorol wedi treiddio drwyddo, sy’n golygu bod y gwaith ar y ffin rhwng cerflunwaith a nwyddau bwrdd ymarferol. Roeddwn am wella profiad amgylchedd bwyta diwylliant y Gorllewin a wnaeth fy sbarduno i greu nwyddau bwrdd cyfoes gan ddefnyddio dulliau traddodiadol er mwyn eu gwneud a ddysgais yn Tsieina a De Corea. Rwyf am newid sut byddwn ni’n rhyngweithio â’r pethau y byddwn yn eu defnyddio wrth y bwrdd a newid hefyd sut byddwn yn rhyngweithio â’n gilydd. Fe wnaeth athroniaeth Wabi-Sabi ddylanwadu’n fawr ar fy nyluniadau. Er mwyn cyfoethogi amgylchedd, mae awydd ynof i greu ffurfiau sy’n afreolaidd ac rwy’n gallu gwerthfawrogi’r amherffaith. Mae ymdeimlad cryf ohonof i fy hun fel unigolyn i’w weld yn y darnau hyn a grëwyd gan fy nwylo innau. Fy amcanion oedd gwneud pethau a fyddai’n pryfocio’r person fyddai’n eu trafod mewn ffordd agos a synhwyrus. Roedd y broses araf o wneud y nwyddau yn cynnwys adeiladu slabiau, adeiladu torchau a phinsio. Mae’r ffurfiau’n disgrifio sut gwnaeth fy nwylo gerfio’r clai ac maen nhw’n ymdebygu’n union i dirwedd y corff dynol. Mae’r gwydro a ddefnyddiais yn dangos ansawdd ffantasiol unigryw â’r arlliw o liw cnawd yn cynrychioli’r corff a’r rhelyw hylifôl. Y ddaear yw fy nghyfrwng. Fy nwylo yw’r offer sydd gennyf.
