This proposal is a mixed-use scheme of apartments and work units on a prominent site at Barry Island, South Wales.

In response to the brief, the building and site has been designed to minimise the environmental impact of the development, whilst enhancing the local environment for wildlife and residents. The surrounding context of the site determined the building material selection and colour pallet of the design, to make it a more rich and engaging building for the environment. Low carbon materials, along with renewable energy and rainwater harvesting has been incorporated into the design.

The site features bedrock and very little topsoil, therefore the building has been stepped and positioned in harmony with the site’s topography. Its position allows for maximum solar gain along with panoramic coastal views. Due to very little topsoil, green roofs and landscaping has been used to the south of the building to improve on-site drainage and promote plant growth.

Repetition was a key feature in the design of the floor plans. The use of hot rolled steel and precast concrete flooring are ideal repetitive elements, which allow for an ease of build-ability while reducing the skill and labour required on site. The choice of structure allows for large clear spans with unobstructed floor space. Floor to ceiling heights have been carefully considered to ensure the building is below 18m which provided a lot more flexibility within the design. Horizontal emphasis in the design reduces the overall impact of its height resulting in enhanced coastal views.

Mae’r cynnig hwn yn gynllun defnydd cymysg o fflatiau ac unedau gwaith ar safle amlwg yn Ynys y Barri, De Cymru.

Mewn ymateb i’r brîff, dyluniwyd yr adeilad a’r safle i leihau effaith amgylcheddol y datblygiad i’r eithaf, tra’n gwella’r amgylchedd lleol ar gyfer bywyd gwyllt a thrigolion. Roedd cyd-destun amgylchynol y safle yn pennu dewis y deunyddiau adeiladu a phalet lliw’r dyluniad, i’w wneud yn adeilad mwy cyfoethog ac atyniadol i’r amgylchedd. Mae deunyddiau carbon isel, ynghyd ag ynni adnewyddadwy a chynaeafu dŵr glaw, wedi’u hymgorffori yn y dyluniad.

Mae’r safle’n cynnwys creigwely ac ychydig iawn o uwchbridd, felly mae’r adeilad wedi’i osod a’i leoli mewn cytgord â thopograffi’r safle. Mae ei leoliad yn caniatáu’r enillion solar mwyaf posibl ynghyd â golygfeydd panoramig o’r arfordir. Oherwydd y prinder uwchbridd, defnyddiwyd toeau gwyrdd a thirlunio i’r de o’r adeilad i wella draeniad ar y safle ac i hybu twf planhigion.

Roedd ailadrodd yn nodwedd allweddol yn nyluniad y cynlluniau llawr. Mae defnyddio dur rholio poeth a lloriau concrit wedi’u rhag-gastio yn elfennau ailadroddus delfrydol, sy’n caniatáu adeiladu rhwydd a lleihau lefelau gofynnol o ran sgiliau a llafur ar y safle. Mae’r dewis o strwythur yn caniatáu rhychwantu clir a gofod llawr sy’n rhydd o rwystrau. Mae uchderau llawr i’r nenfwd wedi’u hystyried yn ofalus er mwyn sicrhau bod yr adeilad yn is na 18 metr, ac fe roddodd hynny lawer mwy o hyblygrwydd i’r dyluniad. Mae pwyslais llorweddol yn y dyluniad yn lleihau effaith gyffredinol ei uchder, gan arwain at well golygfeydd o’r arfordir.
