BA & BSc Product Design

Over the course of the year, our third year Product Design students have been challenged by a range of different briefs, allowing them to demonstrate their skills as Product Designers. They have demonstrated:

  • An ability to design and develop a new product (or system) from the initial identification of the “Need for a new design” through all stages of the user-focussed product development process.
  • An ability to present appropriate outcomes in response to a given brief.
  • Effective communication skills using a range of media.
  • Creativity in response to a given brief.
  • Professionalism when working to meet the requirements of a client’s brief.
  • An ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Time management skill to meet varying project time frames.
  • Application of appropriate research and design methodologies in response to a given brief.
  • Appropriate styling and aesthetics.
  • Prototyping, both real and/or virtual to demonstrate the feasibility of the solution.

The brief’s they have undertaken include:

‘To address the need for a systems thinking approach during the design process. You will focus on “Circular Economy” principals to produce new designs, which improve natural human interactions in the work/learn space.’

‘To Design a business seat and cabin layout suitable for ultra-long haul flights on an Airbus A350. The design should consider: The passenger – the time they spend sitting, the phases of their flight, the feeling of confinement during the flight and their experience. The crew – their interactions with the passengers, the storage needed and their role.'

‘To design and develop a new product (or system) from the initial identification of the “Need for a new design” through all stages of the user-focussed Product Development Process. Students must undertake an appropriate programme of market and technical research together with a critical analysis of primary and secondary sources of information.’

‘To design a new wrist splint that provides a personalised solution, that is comfortable and more stylish than splints provided by the UK NHS. Although it costs a little more, people are willing to pay for a product that they have to wear for long periods during the day in order to maintain hand posture.’

‘To design a product that helps to guide the user’s foot into the correct position on the pedal(s) and ensures it does not slip off as they apply force. It means that they do not have to buy expensive, specialist equipment and can therefore enjoy cycling with their friends and family in safety and convenience.’

‘To design a system or process to turn the last mile of delivery into the first mile of recycling. Campus locations, where the population is contained, could be an excellent source of clean, high quality fibre for DS Smith. The proposal should be realistic and will be trialled in 2020.’

Eleni, cafodd ein myfyrwyr dylunio cynnyrch o’r drydedd flwyddyn eu herio gan amrywiaeth o wahanol friffiau, gan eu galluogi i ddangos eu sgiliau fel dylunwyr cynnyrch. Maent wedi dangos:

  • Y gallu i ddylunio a datblygu cynnyrch (neu system) newydd o'r dull cychwynnol o nodi'r "angen am ddyluniad newydd" drwy bob cam o'r broses datblygu cynnyrch sy'n canolbwyntio ar y defnyddiwr.
  • Y gallu i gyflwyno canlyniadau priodol mewn ymateb i friff penodol.
  • Sgiliau cyfathrebu effeithiol gan ddefnyddio ystod o gyfryngau.
  • Creadigrwydd mewn ymateb i friff penodol.
  • Proffesiynoldeb wrth weithio i fodloni gofynion brîff cleient.
  • Y gallu i weithio'n effeithiol fel rhan o dîm.
  • Sgiliau rheoli amser i gwrdd â gwahanol fframiau amser prosiectau.
  • Defnyddio methodolegau ymchwil a dylunio priodol mewn ymateb i friff penodol.
  • Steilio ac estheteg briodol.
  • Prototeipio, gwirioneddol a/neu rhithwir i ddangos dichonoldeb yr ateb.

Mae'r brîff y maent wedi ymgymryd ag ef yn cynnwys:

'I fynd i'r afael â'r angen am ymagwedd meddylfryd systemau yn ystod y broses ddylunio. Byddwch yn canolbwyntio ar egwyddorion "economi gylchol" i gynhyrchu dyluniadau newydd, sy'n gwella rhyngweithiadau dynol naturiol yn y gofod gwaith/dysgu.'

'I ddylunio sedd fusnes a chynllun caban sy'n addas ar gyfer teithiau awyr HIR IAWN ar Airbus A350. Dylai'r dyluniad ystyried: Y teithiwr – yr amser a dreuliant yn eistedd, cyfnodau eu hediad, y teimlad o gyfyngu yn ystod yr hediad a'u profiad. Y criw – eu rhyngweithiadau â'r teithwyr, y storfa sydd ei hangen a'u rôl.'

'dylunio a datblygu cynnyrch (neu system) newydd o'r dull cychwynnol o nodi'r "angen am ddyluniad newydd" drwy bob cam o'r broses sy'n canolbwyntio ar y defnyddiwr datblygu cynnyrch. Mae'n rhaid i fyfyrwyr ymgymryd â rhaglen briodol o ymchwil i'r farchnad a thechnegol ynghyd â dadansoddiad beirniadol o ffynonellau gwybodaeth sylfaenol ac eilaidd.'

'Dylunio sblint garddwrn newydd sy'n darparu datrysiad personol, sy'n gyfforddus ac yn fwy chwaethus na sblintiau a ddarperir gan GIG y DU. Er ei fod yn costio ychydig yn fwy, mae pobl yn fodlon talu am gynnyrch y mae'n rhaid iddynt ei wisgo am gyfnodau hir yn ystod y dydd er mwyn cynnal osgo'r dwylo.'

'I ddylunio cynnyrch sy'n helpu i dywys troed y defnyddiwr i'r safle cywir ar y pedal/pedalau ac yn sicrhau nad yw'n llithro i ffwrdd wrth iddynt ddefnyddio grym. Mae'n golygu nad oes rhaid iddyn nhw brynu offer drud, arbenigol ac felly maen nhw'n gallu mwynhau beicio gyda'u ffrindiau a'u teulu yn ddiogel ac yn gyfleus.'

'Cynllunio system neu broses i droi'r filltir olaf o gyflenwi yn filltir gyntaf ailgylchu. Gallai lleoliadau ar gampws, lle mae'r boblogaeth wedi'i chynnwys, fod yn ffynhonnell wych o ffibr glân o ansawdd uchel i DS Smith. Dylai'r cynnig fod yn realistig a chaiff ei dreialu yn 2020.'
