I believe that ceramics is an undervalued material. As humans we have forged a relationship with ceramics for thousands of years and yet we somehow take it for granted. We are constantly in contact with plates, cups, bowls, etc. but we never pay these objects enough attention or grant them enough credit for their use and purpose. I want bring attention to tableware and especially its importance to us within our lives, but also their value as art in their own right; plates can also be art!

I want to use plates as the means to express these views and how plates have been over commercialised. We have forgotten and fallen out of love with our tableware. Plates are underrated and have been made dispensable by the mass-production industry in places like Stoke-on-Trent. Mass slip-casting has taken all the love and magic out of slip-casting. It is a process which should be enjoyed and yet we allow machines take out every unique nuance, making the plates generic and banal.

Using slip-casting methods of pouring plaster moulds and casting out of them allows me to produce a pile of plates but alter them to create unique pieces. The shape of the plate is recognisable throughout, but each plate demonstrates the pouring lines created by hand slip-casting. Therefore, celebrating the process and the fluidity of the slip, languishing in the transformation of liquid clay to solid clay, inviting us to look beyond the white plate.

Dwi’n credu bod cerameg yn ddeunydd nad yw’n cael ei werthfawrogi ddigon. Fel bodau dynol, rydym wedi meithrin perthynas â cherameg dros filoedd o flynyddoedd ac eto rydym yn ei gymryd yn ganiataol rywsut. Rydym mewn cyswllt cyson â phlatiau, cwpanau, powlenni, ac ati ond fyddwn ni byth yn rhoi digon o sylw i’r gwrthrychau hyn nac yn rhoi digon o barch iddyn nhw oherwydd eu defnydd a’u pwrpas. Dwi am roi sylw i lestri bwrdd ac yn arbennig eu pwysigrwydd i ni yn ein bywydau, ond hefyd eu gwerth fel celf yn eu rhinwedd eu hunain; gall platiau fod yn gelf hefyd!

Dwi am ddefnyddio platiau fel ffordd o fynegi’r safbwyntiau hyn a sut mae platiau wedi cael eu gor-fasnacheiddio. Rydym ni wedi anghofio a chwympo mas o gariad gyda’n llestri bwrdd. Nid yw platiau’n cael eu gwerthfawrogi ddigon ac maen nhw wedi cael eu gwneud yn bethau dibwys gan y diwydiant masgynhyrchu mewn llefydd fel Stoke-on-Trent. Mae castio slip ar raddfa fawr wedi dwyn yr holl gariad a hud a lledrith o’r broses o fwrw slipiau. Mae’n broses y dylid ei mwynhau ac eto rydym yn caniatáu i beiriannau ddwyn pob naws unigryw, gan wneud y platiau’n anniddorol ac ystrydebol.

Mae defnyddio dulliau castio slip o arllwys mowldiau plastr a bwrw allan ohonynt yn fy ngalluogi i gynhyrchu pentwr o blatiau ond eu newid i greu darnau unigryw. Mae modd adnabod siâp y plât drwyddo draw, ond mae pob plât yn dangos y llinellau tywallt a grëwyd gan gastio slip â llaw. Felly, dathlu’r broses ac ystwythder y slip, sy’n nychu yn y broses o drawsnewid clai hylif yn glai solet, gan ein gwahodd i edrych y tu hwnt i’r plât gwyn.
