Sound plays a fundamental part in our everyday lives, yet rarely is it truly heard. As John Cage demonstrated in his 4;33, no environment is completely silent. This is the crux of my work. We are constantly surrounded by sound, and the sonic landscape of an environment plays a huge part in its’ character and our reception of it. I seek to enhance and respond to these sonic environments, altering our spaces and how we perceive them.

Having grown up studying the violin, music has a strong influence on my work. The distinction between art and music, noise and sound, is something I explore within my practice – why are we drawn to certain frequencies, rhythms and combinations? What makes a ‘good’ sound? The power of sound to stimulate emotions, memories, and our sensorium is particularly potent, and the type of sound greatly influences this. I explore these themes with sound used as both my subject matter and my medium.

Mae sain yn rhan hanfodol o’n bywydau bob dydd, ond anaml iawn y clywir sain mewn gwirionedd. Fel y dangosodd John Cage yn ei 4;33, nid oes unrhyw amgylchedd yn gwbl dawel. Dyma graidd fy ngwaith. Cawn ein hamgylchynu’n gyson gan sain, ac mae tirwedd sonig amgylchedd yn rhan enfawr o’i gymeriad a’r ffordd rydym ni’n ymateb i’r dirwedd. Dwi’n ceisio gwella ac ymateb i’r amgylcheddau sonig hyn, gan newid ein llefydd a sut rydym yn eu gweld.

Yn sgil cael fy magu’n astudio’r ffidil, mae cerddoriaeth yn ddylanwad cryf ar fy ngwaith. Mae’r gwahaniaeth rhwng celf a cherddoriaeth, sŵn a sain, yn rhywbeth dwi’n ymchwilio iddo yn fy ymarfer – pam ein bod yn cael ein denu gan amleddau, rhythmau a chyfuniadau penodol? Beth sy’n gwneud sain ‘da’? Mae pŵer sain i ysgogi emosiynau, atgofion, a’n synhwyrau yn arbennig o rymus, ac mae’r math o sain yn dylanwadu’n fawr ar hyn. Dwi’n archwilio’r themâu hyn gyda sain a ddefnyddir fel fy mhwnc a’m cyfrwng.

I have recently been exploring ideas related to the home and memory, and how they form identity. I am interested in how to defy the imperative to follow a linear structure in personal narrative and instead look for a more honest depiction of memory, which is itself...
