Jack Kenton

BA (Hons) Product Design

Hello, my name is Jack Kenton. As a Product Designer my work is directed by my ethical concerns about the negative impact of products on human life and the environment. I believe products should improve the lives of their consumer without damaging the world and that you shouldn’t need to be wealthy to have a good life. Modern products give the impression that their users are simply another component rather than improving their user’s life beyond their most basic functions at the cost of precious resources providing often only marginal improvements to existing products in order to maximise their financial returns, arguably decreasing their quality of life.

Equal parts science and art, the products I design embody these concepts through their purposes, environmentally considerate materials and their user interactions with a personal focus on researching for new innovative designs. Alongside this, I focus on making high quality goods available to low income markets in order to democratise well-being.

Eco and Ethical design are my passion and, in my work, I try to reverse the ecological depletion of resources and disregard for the health and wealth of consumers from the previous decades of the world design choices. I apply this belief to my work from a user centred health position coupled with a care for the material and personal impact on the environment with the aim to create a subtly restored balance both within nature and within the consumer-product relationship that promotes world and personal health.

Helo, fy enw i yw Jack Kenton. Fel dylunydd cynnyrch, caiff fy ngwaith ei lywio gan fy mhryderon moesegol am effaith negyddol cynhyrchion ar fywyd dynol a’r amgylchedd. Rwy’n credu y dylai cynhyrchion wella bywydau eu defnyddwyr heb niweidio’r byd ac na ddylai fod angen i chi fod yn gyfoethog i gael bywyd da. Mae cynnyrch modern yn rhoi’r argraff nad yw eu defnyddwyr yn ddim mwy na chydran arall, yn hytrach na gwella bywyd eu defnyddwyr y tu hwnt i’w swyddogaethau mwyaf sylfaenol ar draul adnoddau gwerthfawr, gan gynnig dim mwy na mân welliannau’n aml i gynhyrchion sy’n bodoli’n barod er mwyn cael yr elw mwyaf, a gellid dadlau bod hynny’n lleihau ansawdd bywyd defnyddwyr.

Mae’r cynhyrchion rwyf yn eu dylunio’n hanner gwyddoniaeth, hanner celf, ac yn ymgorffori’r cysyniadau hyn drwy eu dibenion, deunyddiau sy’n ystyriol o’r amgylcheddol a’u rhyngweithiadau â’u defnyddwyr gyda ffocws personol ar ymchwilio ar gyfer dyluniadau arloesol newydd. Yn ogystal â hyn, rwy’n canolbwyntio ar sicrhau bod nwyddau o ansawdd uchel ar gael i farchnadoedd incwm isel er mwyn democrateiddio llesiant.

Eco-ddylunio a dylunio moesegol yw’r pethau rwy’n teimlo’n angerddol yn eu cylch ac, yn fy ngwaith, rwy’n ceisio gwrthdroi’r disbyddu ecolegol o adnoddau a’r diffyg ystyriaeth i iechyd a chyfoeth defnyddwyr o’r degawdau blaenorol o ddewisiadau dylunio’r byd. Rwy’n cymhwyso’r gred hon i’m gwaith o safbwynt iechyd sy’n canolbwyntio ar y defnyddiwr ynghyd ag ystyriaeth i’r effaith faterol a phersonol ar yr amgylchedd, gyda’r nod o greu cydbwysedd wedi’i adfer yn gynnil o ran natur ac yn y berthynas rhwng y defnyddiwr a’r cynnyrch sy’n hyrwyddo iechyd y byd ac iechyd personol.

A collaborative project with Josh Winn focussing on the use of mechanism and personality in design using both movement and lighting to create a degree of personification in an otherwise utility object.

Prosiect cydweithredol gyda Josh Winn, yn canolbwyntio ar ddefnyddio mecanwaith a phersonoliaeth wrth ddylunio gan ddefnyddio symudiadau a goleuo i greu rhywfaint o bersonoli mewn gwrthrych sydd fel arall yn iwtilitaraidd.

A single day collaborative project involving myself, Josh Winn and Adam Joseph in identifying, developing and modelling an innovative method of production for a custom wrist splint using perforated metal.

Prosiect cydweithredol undydd gennyf i, Josh Winn ac Adam Joseph, yn nodi, datblygu a modelu dull cynhyrchu arloesol ar gyfer sblint arddwrn pwrpasol wedi’i wneud o fetel tyllog.

This was a brand expansion exercise aimed at considering ways in which an established brand might use that brand identity to expand into other markets. I selected Marshall a manufacture of guitar amplification and deigned a personal Bluetooth speaker system using the Marshall branding. It is interesting to note that shortly after this project Marshall announced plans to enter this market with a range of Bluetooth personal speakers.

Roedd hwn yn ymarfer ehangu brand, â’r nod o ystyried ffyrdd y gallai brand sefydledig ddefnyddio’r hunaniaeth brand honno i ehangu i farchnadoedd eraill. Dewisais Marshall, sy’n cynhyrchu seinchwyddwyr ar gyfer gitarau, a dyluniais system seinydd Bluetooth personol gan ddefnyddio brand Marshall. Mae’n ddiddorol nodi, yn fuan ar ôl y prosiect hwn, cyhoeddodd Marshall gynlluniau i fynd i mewn i’r farchnad hon gydag ystod o seinyddion Bluetooth personol.

Named for the 18th Century astronomer, Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille, this was a project to develop a work/night light which, by the variation of the lamp’s colour temperature and light intensity to better match the user’s circadian rhythm can act as an aid to better and more restful sleep patterns.

Enwyd y prosiect hwn ar ôl y seryddwr o’r 18fed Ganrif, Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille, a nod y prosiect oedd datblygu golau gweithio/golau nos, ac wrth amrywio tymheredd lliw a dwyster golau’r lamp, gellir addasu’r golau i gyd-fynd yn well â rhythmau beunyddiol y defnyddiwr, sy’n gallu gweithredu fel cymorth o ran sefydlu patrymau cysgu gwell a mwy gorffwysol.
