Dusk (2019)
My artworks explore the confusing difference between reality and reflections, blurring the lines between photography and collage. With influences ranging from David Hockney to Richard Billingham, I am able to focus on and capture my everyday mundane environments. My photographs act as reflections of the personalities that inhabit these spaces. It is in these familiar surroundings that I feel the most comfort.
Dusk presents my sense of comfort, the longing to be in my safe zones. I attempt to contain my emotions and present them through a series of informed collages. My documentary type photographs are transformed into collages that intentionally tell a story. I call on my memories to introduce a new narrative in order to define my personal experiences.
The collection includes fragmented images layered on top of photographs taken inside my mother’s home, my grandmother’s home and my great-grandparent’s home. The photographs included were taken during dusk, where the warm lighting sincerely represents my warm fondness of these places. The materials, found objects and hand made artefacts featured suggest a story. A story of the objects owners, whilst still holding on to a certain sense of anonymity. What is the relationship between objects and identity?
Dusk consists of my ongoing research into memory and identity. The physical representation of my memories allows me to present new ideas of the past. By using my art to directly communicate my experiences I have been able to find something interesting in ordinary places. Time and life are my materials.
Mae fy ngwaith celf yn archwilio’r gwahaniaeth dryslyd rhwng realiti ac adlewyrchiadau, gan bylu’r llinellau rhwng ffotograffiaeth a collage. Gyda dylanwadau’n amrywio o David Hockney i Richard Billingham, gallaf ganolbwyntio ar fy amgylcheddau cyffredin o ddydd i ddydd a’u dal. Mae fy ffotograffau yn gweithredu fel adlewyrchiadau o’r personoliaethau a geir yn y gofodau hyn. Rwy’n teimlo mai yn yr amgylcheddau cyfarwydd hyn y caf y cysur mwyaf.
Mae Dusk yn cyflwyno fy ymdeimlad o gysur, yr awydd i fod mewn man diogel. Rwy’n ceisio rheoli fy emosiynau a’u cyflwyno mewn cyfres o collages llawn gwybodaeth. Caiff fy ffotograffau sydd ar ffurf dogfennau eu trawsnewid yn collages sy’n adrodd stori yn fwriadol. Rwy’n adalw fy atgofion er mwyn cyflwyno naratif newydd er mwyn diffinio fy mhrofiadau personol.
Mae’r casgliad yn cynnwys darnau o ddelweddau wedi’u haenu ar ben ffotograffau a gymerwyd yng nghartref fy mam, yng nghartref fy mam-gu ac yng nghartref fy hen fam-gu a hen dad-cu. Cymerwyd y ffotograffau wrth iddi dywyllu, gyda’r golau cynnes yn cynrychioli fy hoffter o’r llefydd hyn. Mae’r deunyddiau, y gwrthrychau a ganfuwyd a’r arteffactau a wnaed â llaw yn awgrymu stori. Stori o berchnogion y gwrthrychau, gan ddal ymlaen i ymdeimlad o anhysbysrwydd. Beth yw’r gydberthynas rhwng gwrthrychau a hunaniaeth?
Mae Dusk yn cynnwys fy ngwaith ymchwil parhaus i atgofion a hunaniaeth. Mae’r gynrychiolaeth ffisegol o’m hatgofion yn fy ngalluogi i gyflwyno syniadau newydd o’r gorffennol. Drwy ddefnyddio fy nghelf i gyfathrebu fy mhrofiadau yn uniongyrchol, rwyf wedi llwyddo i ganfod rhywbeth diddorol mewn llefydd cyffredin. Amser a bywyd yw fy neunyddiau.
