Mollie Worton

BA (Hons) Artist Designer Maker

I explore the connection between human and object, and, how one may strengthen this relationship through concept. Design, craft and, art all take their intertwined role within my work; each one bouncing off each other. I strive to balance design and craft with conceptual based art; making items that may not fit the traditional parameters of design.

The Living Room : Papier-Mâché Furniture

The ‘Living’ Room is not revolutionary in its material choice; but in its contextual application. It is a lounge not meant for the human to inhabit, which opposes the entitlement we as a society have granted ourselves to use and consume the planet. In the 19th century papier-mâché furniture was very commonplace, as the expense of paper meant that none would be wasted. Despite the abundance of paper waste now available, we have lost this craft along with our ‘make do and mend’ culture.

This lounge, composed of papier-mâché furniture, challenges us to consider which products or materials we adopt into our domestic lives and in turn, questions our preference to furnish our spaces with items that, though stylish, recklessly ignore at what cost. The pieces of paper furniture in this room have mutated, to become the inhabitants. In our warped society we favour fashion over the beauty of the planet that birthed us – it’s time to consider the consequences and restore the balance.

Rwy’n ymchwilio i’r cysylltiad rhwng y dynol a’r gwrthrych a sut y gellir cryfhau’r berthynas hon trwy gysyniad. Mae gan ddylunio, crefft a chelf i gyd rôl wedi’u hymblethu o fewn fy ngwaith; pob un yn bownsio oddi ar ei gilydd. Rwy’n ceisio cydbwyso dylunio a chrefft gyda chelf seiliedig ar gysyniadau; gan wneud eitemau efallai nad ydynt yn ffitio paramedrau dylunio traddodiadol.
Yr Ystafell Fyw: Dodrefn Papier-Mâché

Nid yw Yr Ystafell ‘Fyw’ yn chwyldroadol o ran ei dewis o ddeunyddiau; ond o ran ei chymhwysiad cyd-destunol. Mae’n lolfa na fwriedir i ddyn ei ddefnyddio, sy’n herio’r hawl yr ydym wedi’i rhoi i’n hunain i ddefnyddio a pheri traul i’r planed. Yn y 19eg ganrif roedd dodrefn papier-mâché yn gyffredin iawn, gan i gost uchel papur olygu na fyddai dim byd yn cael ei wastraffu. Er gwaetha’r digonedd o wastraff papur sydd bellach ar gael, rydym wedi colli’r grefft hon ynghyd â’r diwylliant ‘clytio a thrwsio’.

Mae’r lolfa hon, sydd wedi’i chreu o ddodrefn papier-mâché, yn ein herio i ystyried pa nwyddau neu ddeunyddiau yr ydym yn eu mabwysiadu yn ein bywydau domestig ac yn ei dro, yn cwestiynu ein dymuniad i ddodrefnu ein gofodau gydag eitemau sydd, er eu bod yn steilus, yn anwybyddu’r gost o wneud hynny’n ddi-hid. Mae’r darnau dodrefn bapur yn yr ystafell hon wedi newid fel mai nhw yw’r trigolion. Yn ein cymdeithas gwyrdroëdig rydym yn ffafrio ffasiwn dros brydferthwch y planed a rodd enedigaeth i ni – mae’r amser wedi dod i ystyried y goblygiadau ac adfer y cydbwysedd.
