My work explores the balance between function and ornamentation. Whilst ceramics is often associated with utility, our tactile interaction with their properties can enable a story to be told; a sense of time can be captured through movement in glaze, sense states inferred from the smoothness and roughness in clay. A magical world of experience can be contained within a simple form.

My two main process are throwing and a playful painting style, exploring surface through glaze and line. Work is formed by throwing a cylinder with a rounded base, then impacting opposite sides causing the vase to take on an oval rather than traditional rounded shape and creating a greater surface for painting.

The surface involves a quick brush stroke technique, creating layers of variable thickness using different types of brushes to express energy and movement. This is reduced at 1280c° making the colour richer and giving it depth. The glaze is almost captured mid melt, reminiscent of nature; the rain falling, a deep forest, bloods, galaxies and the sea.

The process of throwing and the vessel are ways I enjoy making, but it is the Interaction between the surface and form, between what you can see of the lines and colour and what you can feel of the physical object that truly fuels my practice.

Mae fy ngwaith yn archwilio’r cydbwysedd rhwng swyddogaeth ac addurn. Er bod cerameg yn cael ei gysylltu â defnyddioldeb yn aml, gall ein rhyngweithiad cyffyrddol â’u nodweddion alluogi i stori gael ei hadrodd; gellir dal ymdeimlad o amser trwy symudiad mewn gwydredd, cyflyrau o synnwyr yn cael ei gasglu o’r llyfnder a’r garwedd mewn clai. Gellir cynnwys byd o brofiad hudolus o fewn ffurf syml.

Fy nwy brif broses yw taflu clai ac arddull chwareus o beintio, gan archwilio arwyneb trwy wydredd a llinell. Mae gwaith yn cael ei ffurfio trwy daflu silindr gyda gwaelod crwn, ac yna bwrw’r ochrau gyferbyn â’i gilydd gan beri i’r fâs droi’n siâp hirgrwn yn hytrach na’r siâp crwn traddodiadol a chreu arwyneb mwy ar gyfer peintio.

Ar yr arwyneb dwi’n defnyddio techneg brwsio gyflym, gan greu haenau o drwch amrywiol gan ddefnyddio gwahanol fathau o frwshys i fynegi egni a symud. Mae hyn yn cael ei rydwytho ar dymheredd o 1280c° gan wneud y lliw yn gyfoethocach a rhoi dyfnder iddo. Caiff y gwydredd ei ddal bron iawn ar ganol y broses doddi, gan atgoffa rhywun o natur; y glaw yn disgyn, coedwig dywyll, gwaed, galaethau a’r môr.

Mae’r broses o daflu’r clai a’r llestr yn ffyrdd dwi’n mwynhau gwneud, ond y rhyngweithio rhwng yr arwyneb a’r ffurf, rhwng yr hyn y gallwch ei weld o’r llinellau a’r lliw a beth y gallwch ei deimlo o’r gwrthrych ffisegol sy’n tanio fy ymarfer mewn gwirionedd.
