The brief for this project required the design and technical development of a 6 story, multi use building incorporating residential and commercial sectors within. The site, located at Friars Point in Barry had many design challenges to overcome due to the location. Uneven and un-level terrain being just one of many.

My proposed design has 6 Commercial units. Each unit has a ground floor studio, complete with a disabled toilet. These studios provide a flexible work space for a wide variety of practices. Each studio has a first floor above with an equally open plan space for office or studio use.

Above these units are a mix of one and two bedroom apartments. Overall there are nineteen dwellings, thirteen of these are single story one bedroom apartments and the other six are two story two bedroom apartments. Housing up to 50 residence.

My Design concept focused on utilising the sites natural beauty by locating the apartments South East with the balconies looking out to sea. Cross ventilation and use of natural light were also aspects that I maintained throughout the design process and executed in the proposed design.

Environmental and sustainable design solutions were also at the forefront of the developmental stage. The use of the obvious choices like recyclable materials and a Photovoltaic (PV) array were big contributors to this. The use of innovative solutions, TX Active and Active BioDynamic concrete are more subtle but valid environmentally friendly elements that improve the quality of the air and reduce the quantity of smog.

Roedd y brîff ar gyfer y prosiect hwn yn galw am ddylunio a datblygu technegol adeilad aml-ddefnydd chwe llawr yn ymgorffori sectorau preswyl a masnachol. Roedd nifer o heriau dylunio i’w goresgyn oherwydd lleoliad y safle, ar Drwyn y Brodyr yn y Barri, gyda thirwedd anwastad ac aml-haenog yn ddim ond un ohonynt.

Mae gan fy nyluniad arfaethedig chwe uned fasnachol, gyda stiwdio ar y llawr gwaelod a thŷ bach i’r anabl ymhob un. Mae’r stiwdios hyn yn darparu gofod gwaith hyblyg ar gyfer amrywiaeth eang o ddefnyddiau. Mae gan bob stiwdio lawr uwchben, gyda gofod cynllun agored ar gyfer defnydd swyddfa neu stiwdio.

Uwchben yr unedau hyn mae cymysgedd o fflatiau un a dwy lofft. At ei gilydd mae 19 o anheddau, 13 o’r rhain yn fflatiau unllawr gydag un llofft, a’r chwech arall yn fflatiau deulawr gyda dwy lofft, gyda lle i hyd at 50 o breswylwyr.

Canolbwyntiodd fy nghysyniad dylunio ar fanteisio ar harddwch naturiol y safle drwy leoli’r fflatiau i wynebu’r de-ddwyrain, gyda balconïau yn edrych allan dros y môr. Roedd traws-awyru a defnyddio golau naturiol hefyd yn agweddau a fu’n ystyriaeth drwy gydol y broses ddylunio, ac fe’u gweithredwyd yn y dyluniad arfaethedig.

Roedd atebion dylunio amgylcheddol a chynaliadwy hefyd yn flaenllaw yn ystod y cam datblygu. Cyfrannodd dewisiadau amlwg fel deunyddiau ailgylchadwy ac amrywiaeth o baneli solar ffotofoltaig yn helaeth at hyn. Mae’r defnydd o ddatrysiadau arloesol, concrit TX Active a Active BioDynamic, yn elfennau mwy cynnil ond ecogyfeillgar ddilys sy’n gwella ansawdd yr aer ac yn lleihau lefelau mwrllwch.
