How Do You See It?
Dyslexia has its positive and negative aspects. The positive side is that I am able to create personal artwork which is meaningful to me deriving from the condition of dyslexia. The negative is that it is often difficult to read, write and express myself through verbal communication.
I have explored dyslexia in order to portray to the audience the way words appear to me whilst reading, writing and communication. This is such a challenge for me, I wanted to translate these challenges into my art work by using text to create pieces to demonstrate the difficulties I encounter on a daily basis.
Through these works, the viewer is able to clearly understand the challenges I face when reading.
Visual stress is also a struggle in my everyday life. Which is a form of dyslexia which affects me in a number of ways? The text blurs, moves around the page and creates mostly circular shapes. And so these pieces are representations of what I see when reading books, I have been able to use my dyslexia to my advantage and incorporate it into my art work. Overlapping, cutting and removing text in books, I have created an accurate depiction of my dyslexia.
Through these techniques I have produced many pieces which demonstrate the significance dyslexia has on my life. This has not only helped others to understand this uncommon condition, but it has also enabled me to understand and appreciate the unique way I view my surrounding environment.
