10,000 Galaxies, 30 Years of Hubble

Capturing the scale of the universe and commemorating 30 years of the Hubble Deep Field Telescope.By using simple data processing methods to create galactic sculptures, this work aims to illustrate the vastness of space. The work is comprised of 2,000 gilded sculptures, set in a grid like structure. These forms are representational of the 10,000 galaxies captured by Hubble, over a distance of 13 billion light years. Galaxies which exist in a patch of sky no greater than the size of a pin head held at arm’s length.

My practice is based around data visualisation, with the subject of astronomy, I use my skills as a maker to communicate data, whose sheer immensity, makes it difficult to comprehend. By creating interactive works viewers can tacitly gain knowledge from the work. A lot of my work involves technology, from designing though to manufacture with processes such as laser cutting, 3D printing, interactive augmented reality and NFC tagging. I work a lot with precious metals, pewter and bronze as well as 3D printed nylon to realise the work, with a large proportion of my time involving the development and planning for final outcomes.

A lot of my inspiration for my pieces is based on the subject of astronomy however I am also inspired by cartography, and its ability to communicate complex information in a way that can be understood by everyone.

10,000 o Alaethau, 30 Mlynedd o Hubble

Gan gofnodi graddfa’r bydysawd a choffau 30 mlynedd o Delesgop Maes Dwfn Hubble. Gan ddefnyddio dulliau prosesu data syml i greu cerfluniau galaethol, mae’r gwaith hwn yn ceisio arddangos helaethrwydd y gofod. Mae’r gwaith wedi’i greu o 2,000 o gerfluniau goreurog, wedi’u gosod mewn adeiledd sy’n debyg i grid. Mae’r ffurfiau hyn yn cynrychioli’r 10,000 o alaethau a gofnodwyd gan Hubble dros bellter o 13 biliwn o flynyddoedd golau. Galaethau sy’n bodoli mewn darn o’r awyr nad yw’n fwy na maint pen pin wedi’i ddal ar hyd braich.

Mae fy arfer yn seiliedig ar ddelweddu data, gyda phwnc seryddiaeth, defnyddiaf fy sgiliau i gyfathrebu data y mae ei helaethrwydd pur yn ei wneud yn anodd ei ddeall. Trwy greu gweithiau rhyngweithiol gall gwylwyr ennill gwybodaeth ymhlyg o’r gwaith. Mae llawer o fy ngwaith yn ymwneud â thechnoleg, o ddylunio hyd at gynhyrchu gyda phrosesau megis torri â laser, argraffu 3D, realiti estynedig rhyngweithiol a thagio NFC. Rwy’n gwneud llawer o waith gyda metelau drudfawr, piwter ac efydd ynghyd â neilon a argraffir yn 3D i wireddu’r gwaith, ac mae cyfran fawr o fy amser yn ymwneud â datblygu a chynllunio at y canlyniad terfynol.

Mae llawer o’m hysbrydoliaeth ar gyfer fy narnau’n seiliedig ar bwnc seryddiaeth, fodd bynnag rwyf hefyd yn cael fy nghyfeirio gan gartograffeg. a’i gallu i gyfleu gwybodaeth gymhleth mewn ffordd y gall pawb ei deall.
