Ambiguous Line

Ambiguous Line investigates drawing in space with line and light, questioning its interaction with the spectator and formulating a visual relationship between the viewer, the overlapping lines and fields and the space, thus creating a sense of motion as it is walked around. Line and light has been used to define the ‘edge’ of a virtual shape, asking the viewer to envisage the rest of the form, using just line and no physical solid objects the piece promotes a heightened sensitivity to the viewer’s experience and gives subtly complex perceptual effects.

The use of light to create illusion reveals the integral relationship between the sculpture and the room in which it occupies, playing with the stable and unstable elements of the work, the piece strives to engage with the viewer on an emotional level and physical embodiment, giving a unique response through aesthetic experience. The simplicity of the thread and the complexity of the intangible effect are juxtaposed. There is also a juxtaposition of solids and voids, deliberately unsettling the act of viewing by blurring the distinction between reality and illusion.
