Abigail Huntington

BA (Hons) Artist Designer Maker

I have created this contemplation retreat within the shell of a 1973 Alpine Sprite caravan. Utilising skills from many different areas such as interior design, woodworking and textile design, I have pushed the boundaries of more traditional uses and combinations of materials with many of my pieces to create small space interior design solutions that double up to provide functional, yet beautiful pieces for a calming, relaxing retreat; all whilst delicately and respectfully drawing influences and techniques from many different cultures and traditions.

Through my work, I have explored how, as a society, we have gradually combined and adapted these techniques, such as hand wood carving and laser cutting, digital stitching and hand stitching. My work celebrates the skill and beauty within these cultures, such as colour, pattern and the meaning behind them; combining them to create a culturally inspired, meditative space.

This contemplation retreat provides a relaxing space, where the viewer feels as though they have been transported from busy, everyday life, into a calm tranquillity, with subtle hints from diverse cultures and concepts. I have created different elements within the space to touch on every sense, not just from looking at the pieces, but by experiencing smells inspired by Moroccan and Indian spices, textures from the numerous materials including Japanese inspired material manipulation and print, together with calming sounds of meditative music. The aim of the retreat I have created is to impact on all who view the space, to instil a calm, tranquil memory of the experience.

Rwyf wedi creu’r encil hwn ar gyfer myfyrio o fewn cragen carafan Alpine Sprite 1973. Gan ddefnyddio sgiliau o lawer o feysydd gwahanol megis dylunio mewnol, gwaith coed a dylunio tecstilau, rwyf wedi gwthio ffiniau’r defnydd a’r cyfuniadau o ddeunyddiau mwyaf traddodiadol ar gyfer llawer o’m darnau i gael creu atebion dylunio ar gyfer gofodau bach mewnol a fydd yn darparu darnau ymarferol ond prydferth er mwyn creu encil lle y gall person ymlacio ac ymlonyddu; a hyn i gyd gan ddefnyddio mewn ffordd dyner a pharchus ddylanwadau a thechnegau o lawer o ddiwylliannau a thraddodiadau gwahanol.

Drwy fy ngwaith rwyf wedi archwilio sut mae ein cymdeithas ni wedi cyfuno ac wedi addasu’r technegau hyn yn raddol, megis cerfio pren â’r llaw a thorri â laser, pwytho digidol a phwytho â’r llaw. Mae fy ngwaith yn dathlu’r sgìl a’r harddwch sydd yn y diwylliannau hyn, megis lliw, patrwm a’r ystyr y tu cefn iddyn nhw; gan eu cyfuno i greu gofod myfyriol sy’n ffrwyth ysbrydoliaeth.

Mae’r encil hwn ar gyfer myfyrio yn lle i ymlacio ynddo lle y bydd y gwylwyr yn teimlo fel petaen nhw wedi’u cludo o fywyd prysur bob dydd i dawelwch llonydd, gydag awgrymiadau bach ysgafn o ddiwylliannau a chysyniadau amrywiol. Rwyf wedi creu elfennau gwahanol o fewn y gofod i gyffwrdd â phob synnwyr, nid yn unig drwy edrych ar y darnau ond drwy brofi arogleuon wedi’u hysbrydoli gan berlysiau Moroco a’r India, deunyddiau niferus i’w cyffwrdd gan gynnwys print a thrafod deunyddiau wedi’u hysbrydoli gan Japan, ynghyd â seiniau cerddoriaeth fyfyriol i’ch tawelu. Nod yr encil rwyf wedi’i greu yw effeithio ar bawb a fydd yn gweld y gofod, i feithrin atgofion tawel llonydd o’r profiad ynddyn nhw.
