BA (Hons) Ceramics

Ady Barker

The landscape contains a particular spirit that is shaped by those who interact with it. The same is true of the making process, with clay responding to the intent and knowledge of the makers hands. A harmony can be found, a meditative connection reached in both encounters. My practice brings these experiences together to tell the story of a location in clay. By combining the techniques of throwing with the illustrative possibilities of slips and sgraffito, I create large scale earthen-ware vessels and sculpture to draw a viewer into my world, encouraging them to see the interactions of the countryside both from the perspective of the land and those who walk upon it.

Mae gan y dirwedd ysbryd arbennig sy’n cael ei siapio gan y rhai sy’n rhyngweithio â hi. Mae’r un peth yn wir am y broses o wneud, gyda chlai yn ymateb i fwriad a gwybodaeth am ddwylo’r gwneuthurwyr. Gellir dod o hyd i harmoni, gellir cyrraedd cysylltiad myfyriol yn y naill gyfarfyddiad a’r llall. Mae fy ymarfer yn dwyn y profiadau hyn ynghyd i adrodd stori lleoliad mewn clai. Trwy gyfuno technegau taflu clai gyda phosibiliadau darluniadol slipiau a sgraffito, dwi’n creu cerfluniau a llestri pridd mawr i ddenu gwyliwr i’m byd, gan ei annog i weld rhyngweithiadau cefn gwlad o safbwynt y tir yn ogystal â’r rhai sy’n cerdded arno.
