My practice explores control and freedom through restrictions. Creating wearable sculpture that forces a restriction on myself, blindness, distance, bounding, these are then used to draw and paint. Working in this manner allows me to forget about choices and regress while creating. Within the paintings and drawings there are moments of being lost, disappearance, and play. There is a balance of control and no control, it is impossible to relinquish all control while creating as choices are still present in the leading up to the drawing, only small fragments of freedom are featured. These small moments of freedom are the motivation for creating restrictive wearable sculpture. Each drawing and painting are done in a secret performance, there are no witnesses and photographic documentation is not displayed, only the traces left behind are. The outcome and the sculpture. The two together creates an ambiguous relationship.

Mae fy ymarfer yn archwilio rheolaeth a rhyddid drwy gyfyngiadau. Gan greu cerflun gwisgadwy sy’n gorfodi cyfyngu ar fy hun – dallineb, pellter, rhwymo – rydw i wedyn yn eu defnyddio i ddarlunio a pheintio. Mae gweithio fel hyn yn caniatáu i mi anghofio am ddewisiadau ac atchweliad wrth greu. Oddi mewn i’r paentiadau a’r lluniadau mae cyfnodau o fod ar goll, o ddiflannu ac o chwarae. Mae cydbwysedd rhwng rheolaeth a dim rheolaeth; mae’n amhosib ildio pob rheolaeth wrth greu gan fod dewisiadau yn dal i fodoli yn y cyfnod cyn dechrau’r darlunio, ond darnau bach o ryddid yn unig sy’n cael sylw. Yr eiliadau byr hyn o ryddid yw’r cymhelliant i greu cerflun gwisgadwy cyfyngol. Mae pob darlun a phaentiad yn cael eu creu yn ystod perfformiad cyfrinachol, heb dystion a heb arddangos unrhyw ddogfennaeth ffotograffig, dim ond yr olion sy’n weddill. Y canlyniad a’r cerflun. Mae’r ddau gyda’i gilydd yn creu perthynas amwys.

I have recently been exploring ideas related to the home and memory, and how they form identity. I am interested in how to defy the imperative to follow a linear structure in personal narrative and instead look for a more honest depiction of memory, which is itself...
