BA (Hons) Artist Designer Maker

Alaw Roberts

As an Artist: Designer Maker, I believe in the value of materials and objects. I have a strong interest in experimenting and discovering new ways of making, creating new techniques and expanding my hand skills in traditional craft specifically in making small objects and jewellery, taking full advantage of new technological possibilities when suitable in my work. Our environment is extremely beautiful and every effort must be made to safeguard its future.

My ethos is to work in the most strategic way to reduce the amount of waste I create, through re-using material waste as much as possible, as raw materials will not last forever. I aim to avoid using harsh chemicals which are hazardous to the environment by using natural non-toxic materials.

I take inspiration from nature and my surroundings and the use of colour tones an integral part of my work. My choice of forms taking inspiration from circular forms then developed into other interesting shapes when deciding on some of my jewellery items through play, working with a compass to design. Working by hand is physically and mentally good, it gives me enjoyment and satisfaction when I have finished a well-made piece of work. I achieve this through producing unique jewellery and decorative/functional bowls. I am skilled at a variety of different material processes and techniques using copper, silver and the process of enamelling with colourful enamel powders using many tools and machinery. I believe that our lives are much richer because of the things we create.

Fel Artist: Cynllunydd Gwneuthurwr, dwi’n credu yng ngwerth deunyddiau a gwrthrychau. Mae gen i ddiddordeb mawr mewn arbrofi a darganfod ffyrdd newydd o wneud, creu technegau newydd ac ehangu fy sgiliau llaw mewn crefftau traddodiadol, yn benodol wrth wneud gwrthrychau bach a gemwaith, gan fanteisio’n llawn ar bosibiliadau technolegol newydd pan fyddant yn addas yn fy ngwaith.

Mae ein hamgylchedd yn brydferth tu hwnt a rhaid gwneud pob ymdrech i ddiogelu ei ddyfodol. Fy ethos i yw gweithio yn y ffordd fwyaf strategol i leihau faint o wastraff dwi’n ei greu, trwy ailddefnyddio deunydd gwastraff cymaint â phosib, gan na fydd deunyddiau crai yn para am byth. Fy nod yw osgoi defnyddio cemegau cryf sy’n beryglus i’r amgylchedd trwy ddefnyddio deunyddiau naturiol nad ydynt yn wenwynig.

Dwi’n cael fy ysbrydoli gan fyd natur a’m hamgylchedd ac mae defnyddio arlliwiau’n rhan annatod o’m gwaith. Yna, datblygodd fy newis o ffurfiau wedi’u hysbrydoli gan ffurfiau cylchol i siapiau diddorol eraill wrth benderfynu ar rai o’m heitemau gemwaith drwy chwarae, gweithio gyda chwmpawd i ddylunio. Mae gweithio â llaw yn dda yn gorfforol ac yn feddyliol, mae’n rhoi mwynhad a boddhad i mi pan fyddaf wedi gorffen darn o waith sydd wedi’i wneud yn dda. Dwi’n cyflawni hyn trwy gynhyrchu gemwaith unigryw a phowlenni addurnol â defnydd ymarferol. Dwi’n fedrus mewn amrywiaeth o wahanol brosesau a thechnegau gyda deunyddiau gan ddefnyddio copr, arian a’r broses o ychwanegu enamel gyda phowdrau enamel lliwgar gan ddefnyddio pob math o offer a pheiriannau. Dwi’n credu bod ein bywydau’n llawer mwy cyfoethog oherwydd y pethau rydym ni’n eu creu.
