My practice involves the use of mundane objects, such as broken pegs, jigsaws, coffee cups and washing lines. Through their mundanity and ubiquitousness, they remind me of a simpler life amongst the complexities of a technological society. My research lies in exploring why such simple objects could have such an influence on our mentality, psychology and construction of memories.

A key reference is the neurologist Oliver Sacks, who worked on understanding memory. In an interview, he questioned “as I close my eyes… Do I see a little boy standing there, or am I seeing it through the eye of the little boy? Just yesterday. And its 55 years ago.” I understand this to mean that memory psychologically transports us back to a time in our own history, and I wanted to recreate this in my art.

I work with mixed media, including painting, sculpture and photography. In my current work, I am projecting family photographs and videos in a hope to present different stages of life that, though personal to me, are universal to each individual. The use of Jigsaws represents fragmented memory to show that though we all have similar experiences, all memories are personal and individual. I want people to step into their memories and reminisce their own history, triggered by the artwork.

Mae fy ymarfer yn cynnwys defnyddio gwrthrychau cyffredin, fel pegiau dillad wedi torri, posau jig-so, cwpanau coffi a leiniau dillad. Drwy eu natur gyffredin a hollbresennol, maen nhw’n fy atgoffa o fywyd symlach ymhlith cymhlethdodau cymdeithas dechnolegol. Mae fy ymchwil yn ymwneud ag archwilio sut y mae gwrthrychau mor syml yn gallu cael cymaint o ddylanwad ar ein meddylfryd, ein seicoleg a’r modd yr adeiladir atgofion.

Cyfeiriad allweddol yw’r niwrolegydd Oliver Sacks, a’i waith ar ddeall y cof. Mewn cyfweliad, holodd “wrth i mi gau fy llygaid… ydw i’n gweld bachgen bach yn sefyll yno, neu ydw i’n ei weld drwy lygad y bachgen bach? Dim ond ddoe. Ac mae 55 mlynedd yn ôl. Ystyr hynny i mi yw bod y cof yn ein cludo’n ôl yn seicolegol i gyfnod yn ein hanes ni ein hunain, ac roeddwn yn awyddus i ail-greu hyn yn fy nghelf.

Rwy’n gweithio gyda chyfryngau cymysg, yn cynnwys peintio, cerflunio a ffotograffiaeth. Yn fy ngwaith cyfredol, rwy’n taflunio ffotograffau a fideos teuluol yn y gobaith o gyflwyno gwahanol gyfnodau bywyd sydd, er eu bod yn bersonol i mi, yn gyffredin i bob unigolyn. Mae defnyddio posau jig-so yn cynrychioli cof tameidiog i ddangos, er ein bod ni i gyd yn cael profiadau tebyg, bod pob atgof yn bersonol ac yn unigol. Rydw i eisiau i bobl gamu i ganol eu hatgofion a hel atgofion am eu hanes eu hunain, a hynny drwy ysgogiad y gwaith celf.

We have never been so connected yet so alone. The internet has become integral to our daily lives, no element of our existence seems untouched by it. But have we been caught and paralysed in the web? We are constantly on display and exposed, yet anonymous. We seem to...

I have recently been exploring ideas related to the home and memory, and how they form identity. I am interested in how to defy the imperative to follow a linear structure in personal narrative and instead look for a more honest depiction of memory, which is itself...
