BA (Hons) Interior Design

Unlike some, I cannot say that I always knew Interior Design was the route I was destined to go down. While I have always had a keen eye and a strong love for artistic design, for me, designing a space seemed like more of a hobby rather than a job that I could pursue and so I turned my attention toward another passion of mine, history.

Since I can remember, my mind has had a constant battle between those two main passions, art and history. For many years I have had each on a different side of a balance scale, constantly teetering back and forth, never knowing which one to settle for.

It wasn’t until I started studying Medieval History in university that I realized how much I enjoyed the art of interior design and how history plays a big part in it. From ancient roman architecture, to the Italian Renaissance movement, to the Industrial Revolution, these eras of history made me aware of how interesting Interior Design could be.

Within my work now, I find myself gravitating toward celebrating history within my designs and allowing the space to tell a story from that moment in time. In addition, my goal and passion as an interior designer, is not only to incorporate previous eras of design, but to provide spaces that stimulate, invigorate and engage users as well as allowing the space to be necessary to the attitudes, joys, and well-being of those who occupy it.

Yn wahanol i rai, ni allaf ddweud fy mod i’n gwybod erioed mai dylunio mewnol oedd y trywydd roeddwn i’n mynd i’w ddilyn. Er bod gen i lygad graff chryn gariad at ddylunio artistig erioed, i mi, roedd dylunio gofod yn teimlo’n fwy o hobi nag o swydd y gallwn i ei gwneud ac felly fe wnes i droi fy sylw at rywbeth arall rwy’n teimlo’n angerddol yn ei gylch, sef hanes.

Ers y galla i gofio, mae fy meddwl wedi bod mewn brwydr gyson rhwng y ddau ddiddordeb pennaf, celf a hanes. Ers blynyddoedd lawer mae’r naill a’r llall wedi bod ar wahanol ochrau’r fantolen, yn mynd yn ôl ac ymlaen rhwng y ddau’n gyson, heb wybod pa un i’w ddewis.

Dim ond pan wnes i ddechrau astudio Hanes Canoloesol yn y brifysgol y gwnes i sylweddoli cymaint yr oeddwn i’n mwynhau’r grefft o ddylunio mewnol a sut mae hanes yn chwarae rhan fawr yn hynny. O bensaernïaeth Rufeinig hynafol, i fudiad y Dadeni Eidalaidd, i’r Chwyldro Diwydiannol, gwnaeth y cyfnodau hyn o hanes fy ngwneud i’n ymwybodol o ba mor ddiddorol y gallai dylunio mewnol fod.

Yn fy ngwaith nawr, rwy’n cael fy nenu tuag at ddathlu hanes yn fy nyluniadau a chaniatáu i’r gofod adrodd stori o’r eiliad honno mewn amser. Yn ogystal, fy nod a’m hangerdd fel dylunydd mewnol yw nid yn unig ymgorffori cyfnodau dylunio o’r gorffennol, ond darparu gofodau sy’n ysgogi, bywiogi ac apelio at ddefnyddwyr yn ogystal â chaniatáu i’r gofod fod yn angenrheidiol i agweddau, llawenydd a lles y rhai sy’n ei ddefnyddio.

I’m not one for grand philosophical ideas through design that will ultimately end up being someones living or work space. As a designer all I really aspire to do is create something that is of value to the person using that bit of design whether it’s a space or a...

To me, design is about working with others to find solutions to their problems. It is only by getting onto someone else’s level and experiencing their journey and needs can one create an experience that doesn’t make assumptions. It is how we use design as a tool to...
