Oriented Strand Design

In my final year at university, I have become interested in understanding art and design through the relativist and formalist paradigm; to which the latter describes my practice. As a formalist material properties are very important to me. This led me to conduct an investigation into oriented strand board. The OSB was chosen for its industrial and functional connotations and its aesthetically intriguing textured surface.

Each outcome in this exhibition is the result of a different approach and treatment of the material. The black framing provides a consistent and neutral platform for the various methods to present themselves. The darker tone contrasts with the warm wood texture allowing it to light up.

In addition, there are some accompanying pieces; a multi surface box, which displays the types of finishing I have explored. And a designer’s book, which conveys the creative and making process behind this project.

I am going on to New Designers and I am considering a FabLab subscription for next year.
