What constitutes an object fascinates me. The core of my practice is an investigation into the nature of objects through the construction of my very own. Turning to the building blocks of the world around me, architecture has become the primary source of inspiration for my collection. Brutalist architecture inspires the geometric forms dominating my work, while the English language and artist quotes act as a catalyst for each new tangent of inquiry.

The strong, rigid shapes of these objects are loud compared to the monochrome, minimalist style of my work. This juxtaposition creates fractal uniformity: something that is both harsh and subtle, bold and quiet, simple and yet complicated. These objects simultaneously conform and reject their very nature to be something of use, something to look at, things to be observed or forgotten. “It (the object) has to be all these things at once to make the thing itself appear”. (Holden, Chewy Cosmos Thingly Time, 2020).

My work is self referential and these objects are without purpose, without function and exist to simply be. There is no better way to summarise my practice than the words of Danish architect, Bjarke Ingles: “there is this kick of seeing a completely novel thing come to life” (Abstract: The Art of Design [Episode 4], 2017).


Rwy’n cael fy swyno gan yr hyn sy’n creu gwrthrych. Craidd fy ymarfer yw ymchwilio i natur gwrthrychau drwy greu fy rhai fy hun. Gan droi at flociau adeiladu’r byd o’m cwmpas, pensaernïaeth yw prif ffynhonnell ysbrydoliaeth fy nghasgliad. Mae pensaernïaeth Friwtalaidd yn ysbrydoli’r ffurfiau geometrig sy’n cael lle blaenllaw yn fy ngwaith, tra bod y dyfyniadau Saesneg a dyfyniadau gan artistiaid yn gweithredu fel catalydd ar gyfer pob llwybr ymholi newydd.

Mae ffurfiau cryf, anhyblyg y gwrthrychau hyn yn swnllyd o’u cymharu ag arddull unlliw, finimalaidd fy ngwaith. Mae’r cyfosodiad hwn yn creu unffurfiaeth ffractal: rhywbeth sy’n llym ac yn gynnil, yn feiddgar ac yn dawel, yn syml ac eto’n gymhleth. Mae’r gwrthrychau hyn ar yr un pryd yn cydymffurfio ac yn gwrthod eu natur i fod yn rhywbeth defnyddiol, yn bethau i edrych arnyn nhw, yn bethau i arsylwi arnyn nhw neu eu hanghofio. “Mae’n rhaid iddo (y gwrthrych) fod yr holl bethau yma ar yr un pryd er mwyn gwneud i’r peth ei hun ymddangos”. (Holden, Chewy Cosmos Thingly Time, 2020).

Mae fy ngwaith yn hunan-gyfeiriadol ac mae’r gwrthrychau hyn heb bwrpas na swyddogaeth ac yn bodoli yn syml er mwyn bod. Nid oes ffordd well i grynhoi fy ymarfer na geiriau’r pensaer o Ddenmarc, Bjarke Ingles: “mae’r wefr hon o weld rhywbeth cwbl newydd yn dod yn fyw” (Abstract: The Art of Design [Pennod 4], 2017).
