Catherine Davies

BA (Hons) Illustration

Catherine Davies is a Welsh illustrator who often uses her work to highlight and spread awareness on taboo issues, focusing on feminist issues and the empowerment of women. Using a combination of bright colour palettes and bold imagery, she believes her work can further the understanding of the messages she aspires to spread awareness about. Her aim is to use her illustrations to spur conversations that should be brought up in today’s society.
Her work is usually created with digital techniques, which are occasionally mixed with traditional media creating bold, impactful images with some textures to incorporate a handmade feel. She enjoys using type playfully in her work and occasionally experiments with printing techniques.

Her current project focuses on Period Poverty within the UK, and glances at the issue of why periods are seen as such a taboo subject. Using illustrative platforms such as gifs, typeface, and commercial packaging, they can help highlight the seriousness of the issue and allow them to be thought provoking, whilst keeping the images playful and engaging. She is hopeful that her work can help to break down barriers and promote understanding of periods to people of all ages and cultures.

Darlunydd o Gymru yw Catherine Davies sy’n aml yn defnyddio ei gwaith i godi ymwybyddiaeth a thynnu sylw at faterion tabŵ, ac mae’n canolbwyntio ar faterion ffeministaidd a grymuso menywod. Drwy ddefnyddio cyfuniad o baletau lliw llachar a delweddaeth feiddgar, mae’n credu y gall ei gwaith wella’r ddealltwriaeth o’r negeseuon mae hi am godi ymwybyddiaeth yn eu cylch. Ei nod yw defnyddio ei darluniau i annog sgyrsiau sydd angen eu cynnal yn y gymdeithas heddiw.

Fel arfer, mae ei gwaith yn cael ei greu gyda thechnegau digidol, sydd weithiau’n cael eu cymysgu â chyfryngau traddodiadol, gan greu delweddau beiddgar ac effeithiol gyda gweadau i greu naws bod y gwaith wedi’i wneud â llaw. Mae hi’n mwynhau defnyddio teip yn chwareus yn ei gwaith ac weithiau’n arbrofi gyda thechnegau printio.

Mae ei phrosiect diweddaraf yn canolbwyntio ar Dlodi Mislif ym Mhrydain, ac yn edrych ar y cwestiwn pam mae’r mislif yn cael ei ystyried yn bwnc tabŵ. Drwy ddefnyddio llwyfannau darluniadol fel gifs, teip, a phecynnu masnachol, gallan nhw helpu i dynnu sylw at ddifrifoldeb y mater a chaniatáu iddyn nhw brocio’r meddwl, gan gadw’r delweddau’n chwareus ac yn ddeniadol. Mae’n gobeithio y gall ei gwaith helpu i chwalu rhwystrau a hyrwyddo dealltwriaeth o’r mislif i bobl o bob oed a diwylliant.
