My time at Cardiff Metropolitan University has presented me with opportunities that have allowed me to develop many new skills whist building on the ones I already possessed. From field modules which have enabled me to experience working within interdisciplinary teams and taught me skills from different courses that have helped progress the quality of my own work, to amazing travel experiences that broadened my cultural knowledge and will forever be a source of inspiration.

Completing my final year in a pandemic has taught me the importance of adaptability and shown me that no obstacle is too difficult to overcome. Some of my biggest achievements came from this year, one of which being writing my dissertation about the impacts social media has on fast fashion consumption and sustainability. Themes in which I try to carry through to my own design practice to ensure I will be conscious of these issues as a designer in the future.

My graduate collection ‘GROWING PAINS’ has taken inspiration from my own personal relationship with mental health and how social media and living through a global pandemic has affected how I feel and how I engage with my surroundings. My designs are approached with a kitsch, childlike aesthetic to evoke a feeling of nostalgia for simpler times of adolescence. Life has been difficult recently; I want this collection to encapsulate the feeling of these struggles and how they can affect someone whilst highlighting that it is okay to feel this way.

Mae fy amser ym Mhrifysgol Metropolitan Caerdydd wedi rhoi cyfleoedd i mi sydd wedi fy ngalluogi i ddatblygu llawer o sgiliau newydd gan adeiladu ar y rhai yr oeddwn eisoes yn eu perchenogi. O fodiwlau maes sydd wedi fy ngalluogi i gael profiad o weithio o fewn timau rhyngddisgyblaethol a dysgu sgiliau i mi o wahanol gyrsiau sydd wedi helpu i ddatblygu ansawdd fy ngwaith fy hun, i brofiadau teithio anhygoel a ehangodd fy ngwybodaeth ddiwylliannol ac a fydd am byth yn ffynhonnell ysbrydoliaeth.

Mae cwblhau fy mlwyddyn olaf mewn pandemig wedi dysgu pwysigrwydd hyblygrwydd i mi ac wedi dangos i mi nad oes unrhyw rwystr yn rhy anodd i’w oresgyn. Deilliodd rhai o’m cyflawniadau mwyaf o’r flwyddyn hon, ac un ohonynt yw ysgrifennu fy nhraethawd estynedig am yr effeithiau y mae’r cyfryngau cymdeithasol yn eu cael ar ddefnydd ffasiwn cyflym a chynaliadwyedd. Mae’r rhain yn themâu lle rwy’n ceisio parhau â’m harfer dylunio fy hun i sicrhau y byddaf yn ymwybodol o’r materion hyn fel dylunydd yn y dyfodol.

Mae fy nghasgliad graddedig ‘GROWING PAINS’ wedi cymryd ysbrydoliaeth o’m perthynas bersonol fy hun ag iechyd meddwl a sut mae’r cyfryngau cymdeithasol a byw drwy bandemig byd-eang wedi effeithio ar sut rwy’n teimlo a sut rwy’n ymgysylltu â’m hamgylchedd. Mae estheteg kitsch, fel plentyn i’m dyluniadau i ysgogi ymdeimlad o hiraeth am adegau symlach o’r glasoed. Mae bywyd wedi bod yn anodd yn ddiweddar; rwy’n awyddus i’r casgliad hwn grynhoi teimladau’r trafferthion hyn a sut y gallant effeithio ar rywun tra’n tynnu sylw at y ffaith ei bod yn iawn teimlo fel hyn.
