What drives my work is the celebration of nature, working with wood in innovative ways enables me to preserve that nature in time, compelling the viewer to question the very materiality of nature itself. I strive to promote a different way of seeing a material that can be otherwise taken for granted. I utilise my wood turning skills to pay respect to the natural form of materials and focus on the raw qualities of grain. By experimenting with scale of grain, I combine various wood species with willow twigs and clear resin to create a material hybrid. I aim to exploit the organic shape and peculiarity of woods that can only be found in small dimensions and therefore cannot be used in traditional wood turning techniques. This in turn allows me to showcase the contrast between different grain profiles. Clear resin is used to bind these together and highlight their form and grain. Deriving through the combination of traditional woodworking techniques and contemporary design are these dynamic lighting pieces which aim to bring the wood itself to the foreground. Why discard a type of wood when it can provide you with endless material choice? No shrub stem is too slim; no tree branch is too small to prevent its use in the process of making.

Yr hyn sy’n gyrru fy ngwaith yw dathlu natur; mae gweithio gyda phren mewn ffyrdd arloesol yn fy ngalluogi i gadw’r natur hwnnw o fewn amser, gan orfodi’r gwyliwr i gwestiynu’r union ddefnyddiau sy’n llunio natur ei hun. Rwy’n ceisio hybu ffordd wahanol o weld deunydd a allai gael ei gymryd yn ganiataol fel arall. Byddaf yn defnyddio fy sgiliau turnio coed i ddangos parch at ffurf naturiol deunyddiau ac i roi ffocws ar nodweddion crai graen. Drwy arbrofi gyda maint y graen, byddaf yn cyfuno gwahanol fathau o bren gyda brigau helyg a resin clir i greu deunydd hybrid. Fy nod yw ymelwa ar y siâp organig a hynodrwydd prennau na ellir eu cael ond mewn dimensiynau bach ac, felly, ni ellir eu defnyddio wrth arfer technegau turnio coed traddodiadol. Bydd hyn yn ei dro yn fy ngalluogi i ddangos y cyferbyniad rhwng gwahanol broffiliau graen. Caiff resin clir ei ddefnydio i rwymo’r rhain wrth ei gilydd ac i amlygu eu ffurf a’u graen. Yn deillio o gyfuniad o dechnegau gwaith coed traddodiadol a dylunio cyfoes y daw’r darnau goleuo dynamig hyn sy’n ceisio dod â’r pren ei hunan i’r amlwg. Pam cael gwared ar fath o goed pan fydd yn gallu rhoi dewis o ddeunydd di-ben-draw i chi? Nid yw coes yr un llwyn yn rhy fain; nid yw cangen yr un goeden yn rhy fach i’w hatal rhag cael eu defnyddio yn y broses wneud.
