Codey Leigh Thomas

Codey is an illustrator working to be as helpful as possible to explain difficult subject matter through imagery. The use of humour and honesty about their experience allows them to explore difficult topics like mental health, faith, and gender identity to challenge preconceptions and to open a space for dialogue. Codey has also developed material promoting an improved relationship between STEM and Arts communities, based on research for the dissertation.

Codey’s interest in the relationship of art and mathematics is based on personal experience. Although an avid mathematician in secondary school, they chose to pursue the arts in further and higher education. Following the research for their dissertation, Codey found that although there was extensive evidence to support an interdisciplinary relationship, the segregation of subjects in Key Stage 3+4 persists.

Their collection of posters on display are in response to these findings, creating a space for Illustration and Mathematics to play together, in the hopes that it will spark conversation to foster a healthier relationship between these subjects, and to inspire young people to unmask some of the beauty of mathematics, hidden behind algorithms and algebraic formula.

The work’s bold lines, bright colours, kind-hearted characterisations and sometimes cynical script provide optimistic statements of the present, and positive affirmations for the future.

Dylunydd sydd yn gweithio i fod mor ddefnyddiol â phosib wrth esbonio pynciau cymhleth trwy ddelweddau yw Codey. Mae’r defnydd o hiwmor a gonestrwydd yn ei galluogi nhw i fynd i’r afael a materion anodd megis iechyd meddwl, cred grefyddol a hunaniaeth rhyw er mwyn herio rhagdybiaethau ac i gynnig gofod ar gyfer trafodaeth. Mae Codey hefyd wedi datblygu deunydd i hyrwyddo gwell perthynas rhwng cymunedau STEM a’r Celfyddydau, yn seiliedig ar ymchwil ar gyfer y traethawd hir.

Daw diddordeb Codey o’r berthynas rhwng celf a mathemateg o brofiad personol. Er ei bod nhw wedi bod yn fathemategydd brwd pan yn yr ysgol uwchradd, dewisodd dilyn y celfyddydau yn eu haddysg bellach ac addysg uwch. Yn dilyn yr ymchwil ar gyfer y traethawd hir, gwelodd Codey er bod yna cryn ddibyn o dystiolaeth i gefnogi perthynas rhwng y disgyblaethau, mae’r ddau faes yn parhau i gael eu gwahaniaethu yng Nghyfnod allweddol 3 a 4.

Mae casgliad Codey o bosteri yn yr arddangosfa yn ymateb i’r casgliadau yna, gan greu gofod i ddylunio a mathemateg cyd-weddu, yn y gobaith o sbarduno sgwrs am feithrin perthynas iach rhwng y pynciau yma, ac i ysbrydoli pobl ifanc i gymryd golwg ar harddwch mathemateg, sydd yn cael ei cholli yn rhy aml du ôl i algorithmau a fformiwlâu algebraidd.

Mae llinellau trwm, lliwiau llachar, cymeriadaeth caredig a sgript sydd ar adegau yn sinigaidd gan y gwaith, ac mae hyn yn cynnig datganiadau optimistaidd am y presennol, a rhagfynegiad cadarnhaol ar gyfer y dyfodol.
