Beauty is pain

The initial inspiration behind the collection came from challenging the pressures from society always expecting perfection. At the start of my project, I heavily researched Body Dysmorphic Disorder, which is a mental disorder characterised by the obsessive idea that some aspect of one’s own body or appearance is severely flawed and therefore warrants exceptional measures to hide or fix it. Further researching this concept of striving for perfection lead me to ballet. How every movement has to be precise and there’s no margin for error. How they push and push themselves to the point where ballerinas are permanently damaged, both physically and mentally.

The collection focuses on beauty and femininity whilst celebrating the strength women have from within, in the face of adversity. This is demonstrated in how I’ve naturally dyed my fabric, creating a bleed effect and the wrap-around garments showing the constraints of anxiety.

Daeth yr ysbrydoliaeth wreiddiol y tu ôl i’r casgliad o herio’r pwysau gan gymdeithas sydd bob amser yn disgwyl perffeithrwydd. Ar ddechrau fy mhrosiect, gwnes ymchwil ddwys i Anhwylder Dysmorffig y Corff, sef anhwylder meddyliol sydd wedi’i nodweddu gan y syniad bod rhyw agwedd ar gorff neu ymddangosiad unigolyn yn ddifrifol ddiffygiol ac felly bod angen mesurau eithriadol i’w guddio neu ei drwsio. Drwy’r ymchwil bellach i’r cysyniad yma o geisio perffeithrwydd ces fy arwain at ddawnsio bale. Y ffordd y mae’n rhaid i bob symudiad fod yn union gywir, heb le i gamgymeriad. Y ffordd mae balerinas yn gwthio eu hunain i’r pwynt lle maen nhw wedi’u difrodi’n barhaol, yn gorfforol ac yn feddyliol.

Mae’r casgliad yn canolbwyntio ar harddwch a benyweidd-dra, gan ddathlu’r cryfder sydd gan fenywod o’r tu mewn, yn wyneb trallod. Caiff hyn ei ddangos yn y ffordd rydw i wedi lliwio fy ffabrig yn naturiol, gan greu effaith waedu, a’r dillad cofleidiol sy’n dangos cyfyngiadau gorbryder.
