BA (Hons) Interior Design

I’m not one for grand philosophical ideas through design that will ultimately end up being someones living or work space. As a designer all I really aspire to do is create something that is of value to the person using that bit of design whether it’s a space or a product. I don’t have a mission statement or any form of idealistic principals of design that are going to shape the world of design going forwards. I’m someone who just wants to create things that people like and can be used in a practical sense.

I think that practicality of use is the main goal of design, when you design something, whatever it may be, you should try to make sure that it meets the needs of the user, and then make it pleasing to the eye. There is certainly a place for creating something that looks nice or something that is thought provoking in the world but not at the cost of the users experience of use. What I feel people should remember is design should improve the lives of those it effects and not the opposite.

Dydw i ddim yn rhywun sy’n hoffi syniadau athronyddol mawreddog drwy ddylunio a fydd yn gofod y bydd rhywun yn byw neu’n gweithio ynddo yn y pen draw. Fel dylunydd, y cyfan rwy’n dyheu am ei wneud yw creu rhywbeth sydd o werth i’r sawl sy’n defnyddio’r darn hwnnw o ddylunio boed yn ofod neu’n gynnyrch. Does gen i ddim datganiad cenhadaeth nac unrhyw fath o egwyddorion dylunio delfrydyddol sy’n mynd i siapio’r byd dylunio wrth symud ymlaen. Dim ond rhywun ydw i sydd eisiau creu pethau y mae pobl yn eu hoffi ac y gellir eu defnyddio’n ymarferol.

Rwy’n credu mai ymarferoldeb o ran defnyddio yw prif nod dylunio, pan fyddwch chi’n dylunio rhywbeth, beth bynnag y bo, dylech chi geisio sicrhau ei fod yn diwallu anghenion y defnyddiwr, ac yna’n ei wneud yn bleserus i’r llygad. Yn sicr, mae lle i greu rhywbeth sy’n edrych yn dda neu’n rhywbeth sy’n ysgogi’r meddwl yn y byd ond nid ar draul profiad y defnyddwyr o’i ddefnyddio. Yr hyn rwy’n ei deimlo y dylai pobl ei gofio yw y dylai dyluniad wella bywydau’r rhai yr effeithir arnyn nhw ganddo ac nid i’r gwrthwyneb.

To me, design is about working with others to find solutions to their problems. It is only by getting onto someone else’s level and experiencing their journey and needs can one create an experience that doesn’t make assumptions. It is how we use design as a tool to...
