BA (Hons) Illustration

I’m an illustrator based in South Wales. Using my passion for heritage, I draw upon my own culture to present Welsh folklore in a new way to help rediscover the ancient identity of Wales. The main themes of my work stem from the Bardic tradition of oral storytelling, nature, and legends, and within this a lot of my research has focussed on Celtic mythology, the Mabinogi, and folklore.

Within my practice I frequently use natural materials, such as pressed and dried flowers, leaves, moss and wood, to create illustrations that reinforce the idea of being at one with nature.
This project is a self-reflective journey of my rediscovery of Welsh cultural identity through folklore, storytelling, traditions and their relationship with nature. Using natural materials in my work to create 3D objects and prints, my aim is to communicate the sense of ancient beauty and wonder in the Welsh landscape and nature. My inspiration comes from walking and immersing myself in these environments, finding the space where stories grow, and places where I found my sense of belonging as I tried to reconnect with my sense of cultural identity.

Culture and stories go hand in hand with the land, especially within Celtic mythology. My work strives to highlight the connection between the two. I hope to celebrate another side of Wales which is slowly being lost and forgotten which is important because when we lose touch with nature we lose touch with ourselves.

Rwy’n ddarlunydd o dde Cymru. Drwy ddefnyddio fy hoffter o dreftadaeth, rwy’n defnyddio fy niwylliant fy hunan i gyflwyno llên gwerin Cymru mewn ffordd newydd i helpu i ailddarganfod hunaniaeth hynafol Cymru. Mae prif themâu fy ngwaith yn deillio o’r traddodiad Barddol o adrodd straeon ar lafar, natur a chwedlau, ac o fewn hynny mae llawer o fy ngwaith ymchwil wedi canolbwyntio ar fytholeg Geltaidd, y Mabinogi a llên gwerin.

Yn fy nghelf, rydw i’n aml yn defnyddio deunyddiau naturiol, fel blodau sychion a blodau wedi’u gwasgu, dail, mwsogl a phren, i greu darluniau sy’n atgyfnerthu’r syniad o fod yn un â natur.
Mae’r prosiect yma’n daith hunan-fyfyriol o fy ailddarganfyddiad o hunaniaeth ddiwylliannol Cymru drwy lên gwerin, adrodd straeon, traddodiadau a’u perthynas â natur. Drwy ddefnyddio deunyddiau naturiol yn fy ngwaith i greu gwrthrychau a phrintiau 3D, fy nod yw cyfleu ymdeimlad o’r harddwch a’r rhyfeddod hynafol sy’n bodoli yn nhirwedd a natur Cymru. Rwy’n cael fy ysbrydoli drwy gerdded ac ymgolli yn yr amgylcheddau yma, a dod o hyd i’r gofod lle mae straeon yn tyfu, a’r llefydd lle rwy’n cael ymdeimlad o berthyn wrth geisio ailgysylltu â fy synnwyr o fy hunaniaeth ddiwylliannol.

Mae diwylliant a straeon yn mynd law yn llaw â’r tir, yn enwedig mewn mytholeg Geltaidd. Mae fy ngwaith yn tynnu sylw at y cysylltiad rhwng y ddau. Rwy’n gobeithio dathlu elfen arall o Gymru sy’n cael ei cholli a’i hanghofio yn araf. Mae hynny’n bwysig oherwydd pan fyddwn ni’n colli cysylltiad â natur, rydyn ni’n colli cysylltiad â ni ein hunain.
