Emily Hacker

BA (Hons) Textiles

I am a surface pattern designer who creates unique patterns from hand drawings and paintings. I am inspired by making a difference, driving inclusion, and raising awareness.

I aim for my designs to be meaningful and inspiring. This collection ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’ focuses on midsummer in Finland, known as the happiest place in the world, where the sun does not set for four weeks. The resulting twenty-four hours of daylight in June and July have a positive effect on mental health through the outdoor activities associated with this time.

This collection is designed to bring the experience of being outdoors in Finland to those unable to do so. I designed it with the disabled and/or vulnerable in mind, including disability within the patterns to high inclusivity and representation. My patterns are thought provoking with every pattern having a meaning, and this collection aims to show that inclusion can be fun, uplifting, and thoughtful.

Rwy’n ddylunydd patrymau arwyneb sy’n creu patrymau unigryw o luniadau a phaentiadau wedi’u gwneud â llaw. Gwneud gwahaniaeth, sbarduno cynhwysiant a chodi ymwybyddiaeth yw’r pethau sydd yn fy ysbrydoli.

Fy nod yw i’m dyluniadau fod yn ystyrlon ac ysbrydoli. Mae’r casgliad hwn ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’ yn canolbwyntio ar ganol haf yn y Ffindir, sy’n cael ei adnabod fel y lle hapusaf yn y byd, lle nad yw’r haul yn machlud am bedair wythnos. Mae’r pedair awr ar hugain o olau dydd ym mis Mehefin a mis Gorffennaf yn cael effaith gadarnhaol ar iechyd meddwl drwy’r gweithgareddau awyr agored sy’n gysylltiedig â’r cyfnod hwn.

Mae’r casgliad wedi’i ddylunio i ddod â’r profiad o fod yn yr awyr agored yn y Ffindir i’r rhai nad ydynt yn gallu gwneud hynny. Fe wnes i ei ddylunio gyda’r anabl a/neu’r rhai sy’n agored i niwed mewn golwg, gan gynnwys anabledd yn y patrymau i dynnu sylw at gynwysoldeb a chynrychiolaeth. Mae fy mhatrymau’n procio’r meddwl ac mae ystyr i bob patrwm, a nod y casgliad yw dangos y gall cynhwysiant fod yn hwyl, yn ddyrchafol ac yn ystyriol.
