‘Pocket Europe’ is a snapshot of a first-time traveller’s journey throughout the cities of Europe.

Being a surface pattern and textile designer based in Cardiff originally from a small town in the Swansea Valleys, I was lucky enough to visit eleven various cities throughout Europe during an inter-railing trip in Summer 2017. This trip, being a key source of inspiration for my project captures the variety of architecture between each city combined with my own specialist style.
Mainly motivated to produce for Fashion Textiles, I aim to create a youthful and positive atmosphere throughout my samples that expresses a bold, striking design. This is influenced by my personal appreciation for the application of bright contrasting colours and expressive patterns.

Initially creating a variety of expressive patterns on a variety of scales with wet/dry medias combined with drawing techniques such as continuous line drawing, my designs have been developed inside the print room to create hand print techniques such as screen printing and flocking. Furthermore, further developed has also been created using computer aided programmes and machine embroidery.

This project focusses on a Spring/Summer collection of fabric samples aimed to be used for fashion garments. Being environmentally conscious with the use of organic materials, I have aimed to create a co-coordinating collection that tells a story of a journey using images and patterns.

Mae ‘Pocket Europe’ yn giplun o daith teithiwr tro cyntaf drwy ddinasoedd Ewrop

A finnau’n ddylunydd tecstiliau yng Nghaerddydd ac yn wreiddiol o dref fechan yng Nghwm Tawe, roeddwn i’n ddigon ffodus i ymweld ag unarddeg o wahanol ddinasoedd yn Ewrop yn teithio ar y rheilffyrdd yn ystod haf 2017. Ar y trip hwn, ffynhonnell allweddol fy ysbrydoliaeth ar gyfer fy mhrosiect, gwelais amrywiaeth o bensaernïaeth yn y gwahanol dinasoedd a chyfunais hyn gyda fy arddull arbenigol fi fy hun. Cynhyrchu Tecstiliau Ffasiwn ydy fy mhrif ddiddordeb a fy nod yw creu awyrgylch ifanc a phositif yn fy samplau sy’n dangos cynllun amlwg a thrawiadol. Fy ngwerthfawrogiad personol o’r defnydd o liwiau llachar gwrthgyferbyniol a phatrymau llawn mynegiant sydd wrth wraidd hynny.

Ar y dechrau, creu amrywiaeth o batrymau llawn mynegiant ar amrywiaeth o raddfeydd gyda chyfryngau gwlyb/sych wedi’u cyfuno â thechnegau lluniadu megis lluniadu llinell barhaus, mae fy nyluniadau wedi eu datblygu tu fewn i’r ystafell argraffu i greu technegau printio â llaw megis sgrin-brintio a fflocio. Hefyd, datblygwyd pethau ymhellach drwy ddefnyddio rhaglenni cynllunio drwy gymorth cyfrifiadur a brodio â pheiriant.

Mae’r prosiect hwn yn canolbwyntio ar gasgliad Gwanwyn/Haf o samplau o ffabrig i’w defnyddio ar gyfer dillad. Gan mod i’n ymwybodol o’r amgylchedd wrth ddefnyddio deunyddiau organig, dw i wedi ceisio creu casgliad cydlynol sy’n adrodd stori o daith drwy ddefnyddio delweddau a phatrymau.
