The Sublime is formless; it has no shape and cannot be depicted because it is an emotion. In order to experience the Sublime we must remove all distractions from our surroundings and submerge ourselves into the space in which we can be elevated to this emotion.

Through my practice I aim to produce a Sublime experience through the stripping back of all representation. The removal of form, colour and structure have meant that there is no visual information to be distracted or overwhelmed by, but the eye instead can rest upon and transcend into this visual plane.

The gradual building of tones using rabbit skin glue has allowed a soft focus onto the canvas, with natural light skimming across the canvas and picking up various shadows and marks, so that the surface of the canvas itself becomes the subject.

It is this realm of experience in which I want people to become conscious of their consciousness; as one must allow themselves to be open to sensation and experience in order to truly feel the Sublime.

Nid oes i’r Aruchel/Sublime unrhyw ffurf o gwbl; nid oes siâp iddo ac ni ellir ei ddynodi gan mai emosiwn ydyw. Er mwyn cael profiad o’r Aruchel/Sublime, bydd rhaid i ni gael gwared ar unrhyw beth o’n hamgylch a fydd yn mynd â’n sylw ac ymroi’n gyfan gwbl i’ r gofod lle y gallwn gael ein dyrchafu i’r emosiwn yma.

Drwy fy ymarfer fy nod yw cynhyrchu profiad Aruchel/Sublime drwy ddiosg pob cynrychiolaeth. Mae cael gwared ar ffurf, lliw a strwythur wedi golygu nad oes dim gwybodaeth weledol i fynd â’n sylw neu a fydd yn ein gorlethu, ond gall y llygad orffwys yn hytrach ar y lefel weledol hon a symud yn drosgynnol iddi.

Mae adeiladu arlliwiau’n raddol drwy ddefnyddio glud croen cwningen wedi sicrhau y bydd ffocws meddal yn mynd ar y cynfas â golau naturiol yn symud yn ysgafn dros y cynfas gan godi gwahanol gysgodion a marciau, fel y bydd arwyneb y cynfas ei hun yn troi’n destun y sylw.

Ar y lefel hon o brofiad rwyf am i bobl ddod yn ymwybodol o’u hymwybod; gan y bydd rhaid i bobl adael iddyn nhw eu hunain fod yn agored i ymdeimlad a phrofiad er mwyn cael gwir deimlo’r Aruchel/Sublime.

I have recently been exploring ideas related to the home and memory, and how they form identity. I am interested in how to defy the imperative to follow a linear structure in personal narrative and instead look for a more honest depiction of memory, which is itself...
