BA (Hons) Textiles

I am a Welsh Textile / Surface Pattern Designer from North Wales. I was brought up on a farm in a small market town situated in the foothills of Cader Idris in Dolgellau. My designs and patterns refer to my upbringing on the farm, the natural landscape, the environment, farm animals as well as the wild flowers and animals on the land. How the natural colours of the landscape change through the seasons inspire me, how the natural stones and rocks differ from other parts of the country. After spending three wonderful years at Cardiff Met., I came to realize in my third year that I had a longing for my home and how I missed seeing family, animals, mountains and the beautiful peacefulness that comes with living in such remote area. I feel that the theme for my final project is truly justified, “Hiraeth”, there is no direct English translation for the word, from a personal point I have tried to create in my drawings and sketches of our animals in their natural surrounding habitat and the longing for them and my home.It is my opinion that I have tried to reflect in my work what “Hiraeth” means to me through animals on my homestead and the surrounding area, even little things relating to the farmyard such as rusty broken gate. I feel that every day on the farm is a new day and how important it is to try and learn something new in order to progress in life and to have a positive attitude.

Rwy’n Ddylunydd Tecstilau / Patrymau Arwyneb Cymreig o Ogledd Cymru. Ces i fy magu ar fferm mewn tref farchnad fach a leolir yn nhroedfryniau Cader Idris yn Nolgellau. Mae fy nyluniadau a phatrymau’n cyfeirio at fy magwraeth ar y fferm, y dirwedd naturiol, yr amgylchedd, anifeiliaid fferm yn ogystal â’r blodau ac anifeiliaid gwyllt ar y tir. Mae’r ffordd y mae lliwiau naturiol y dirwedd yn newid trwy’r tymhorau’n fy ysbrydoli, sut mae’r cerrig a chreigiau naturiol yn wahanol i rannau eraill o’r wlad. Ar ôl treulio tair blynedd ryfeddol ym Met Caerdydd, ddes i sylweddoli yn fy nhrydedd flwyddyn fod gennyf hiraeth am fy nghartref a sut yr oeddwn yn colli gweld fy nheulu, anifeiliaid, y mynyddoedd a’r llonyddwch prydferth sy’n rhan o fyw mewn ardal mor anghysbell. Rwy’n teimlo bod thema fy mhrosiect terfynol, “Hiraeth” wedi’i chyfiawnhau’n wirioneddol, does dim cyfieithiad Saesneg uniongyrchol ar gyfer y gair, o safbwynt personol rwyf wedi ceisio ei greu yn fy narluniadau a brasluniau o’n hanifeiliaid yn eu cynefinoedd amgylchynol naturiol a’r hiraeth drostynt a fy nghartref. Fy marn i yw fy mod wedi ceisio adlewyrchu yn fy ngwaith beth mae “Hiraeth” yn ei olygu i mi trwy anifeiliaid ar fy fferm a’i chyffiniau, hyd yn oed pethau bychain sy’n gysylltiedig â’r buarth megis llidiart rydlyd sydd wedi’i thorri. Rwy’n teimlo bod bob dydd ar y fferm yn ddiwrnod newydd a pha mor bwysig y mae i geisio dysgu rhywbeth newydd er mwyn symud ymlaen mewn bywyd a chael agwedd gadarnhaol.
