Using materials for a purpose they weren’t intended for is an element of design I find fascinating, this involves taking a material and seeing how far I can push its properties within products. I am also interested in space saving and collapsible objects, as with living spaces getting smaller this is an element that can be critical within a design. I wanted to achieve a lighting collection that consists of both these elements, a modern and collapsible design using a material not intended for lighting.

My chosen material is Tyvek®, originally used to protect building exteriors; it is incredibly strong and durable. This lends itself perfectly when it comes to designing collapsible products. ‘Folded’ is a collection of interchangeable lamp shades which allows the user to change the design and function of the light whilst only needing one base. The shades are designed so when they are not in use they can be completely folded away flat. There is an interactive element to the lights as the shade, once folded out and placed on the base transforms in to the switch. The series of pendant lights to accompany the desk lights focuses more on the Tyvek® and on the forms and beautiful patterns that this industrial material can produce.

Mae defnyddio deunydd at ddiben na fwriadwyd e ar ei gyfer yn elfen o ddylunio sy’n fy niddori, mae hyn yn golygu cymryd deunydd a gweld pa mor bell y galla i wthio’i briodweddau o fewn cynhyrchion. Mae gen i ddiddordeb hefyd mewn gwrthrychau sy’n arbed gofod a phlygadwy, gyda mannau byw yn mynd yn llai, gall hwn fod yn elfen hanfodol mewn dyluniad. Roeddwn i am lunio casgliad goleuo sy’n cynnwys y ddwy elfen hyn, dyluniad modern a phlygadwy gan ddefnyddio deunydd na fwriadwyd ar gyfer goleuo.

Tyvek® oedd fy newis o ddeunydd, defnyddiwyd hwn yn wreiddiol i ddiogelu wyneb allanol adeiladau; mae’n anhygoel o gryf a gwydn. Mae hwn yn berffaith addas ar gyfer dylunio cynhyrchion plygadwy. Mae ‘Folded’ yn gasgliad o lamplenni y gellir eu cyfnewid sy’n caniatáu i’r defnyddiwr newid cynllun a swyddogaeth y golau ond dim ond un droed sydd ei angen. Cynlluniwyd y lamplenni fel y gellid eu plygu’n fflat i’w storio. Mae elfen ryngweithiol i’r goleuadau gan fod y lamplen, ar ôl iddi gael ei phlygu a’i gosod ar y droed yn troi’n swits. Mae’r gyfres o oleuadau crog sy’n mynd gyda’r goleuadau desg yn ffocysu mwy ar y Tyvek® ac ar y ffurfiau a’r patrymau hardd y gall y deunydd diwydiannol hwn eu creu.
