I am exploring the cultural and social narratives of true crime, particularly domestic violent crimes. I am particularly inspired by the television series Forensic Files (1996-2011) and I use it as a source for my images. It fascinates me that a crime can happen anywhere to anyone even when we think we’re safe. It truly reflects the unpredictability and chaotic nature of our existences and I like to contrast this by showing vacant, calm, everyday scenes and through my bright, slightly garish use of colour making the viewer feel an uneasiness towards the scenes.
My naive style and unsettling irregular proportions are intentional as I want my work to live between the realms of reality and non-reality containing unrealistic and unexpected colours which contrast the macabre nature of my subject matter. I find the ‘behind closed doors’ atmosphere of the outside of houses intriguing and mysterious, the domestic as a hidden and secretive place. I want to capture the idea of ‘reality is stranger than fiction’. I am fascinated by the techniques forensic scientists use in their work examining human traces left behind at crime scenes and how this narrative of microscopic investigation of the overlooked can offer a wealth of information and help towards giving the dead a voice and potentially justice. My work serves as a reminder that our memory is fallible and unreliable, that we should question the world around us.
