I am exploring the cultural and social narratives of true crime, particularly domestic violent crimes. I am particularly inspired by the television series Forensic Files (1996-2011) and I use it as a source for my images. It fascinates me that a crime can happen anywhere to anyone even when we think we’re safe. It truly reflects the unpredictability and chaotic nature of our existences and I like to contrast this by showing vacant, calm, everyday scenes and through my bright, slightly garish use of colour making the viewer feel an uneasiness towards the scenes.

My naive style and unsettling irregular proportions are intentional as I want my work to live between the realms of reality and non-reality containing unrealistic and unexpected colours which contrast the macabre nature of my subject matter. I find the ‘behind closed doors’ atmosphere of the outside of houses intriguing and mysterious, the domestic as a hidden and secretive place. I want to capture the idea of ‘reality is stranger than fiction’. I am fascinated by the techniques forensic scientists use in their work examining human traces left behind at crime scenes and how this narrative of microscopic investigation of the overlooked can offer a wealth of information and help towards giving the dead a voice and potentially justice. My work serves as a reminder that our memory is fallible and unreliable, that we should question the world around us.

Rwy’n archwilio naratifau diwylliannol a chymdeithasol gwir drosedd, yn enwedig troseddau domestig treisgar. Caf fy ysbrydoli yn benodol gan y gyfres deledu Forensic Files (1996-2011) ac rwy’n ei defnyddio fel ffynhonnell ar gyfer fy nelweddau. Rwyn ymddiddori yn y ffaith y gall trosedd ddigwydd i unrhyw un unrhyw le hyd yn oed pan fyddwn yn meddwl ein bod yn ddiogel. Mae wir yn adlewyrchu natur anrhagweladwy ac anhrefnus ein bodolaeth ac rwy’n hoffi gwrthgyferbynnu hyn drwy ddangos golygfeydd gwag, tawel, bob dydd drwy fy nefnydd llachar a braidd yn orliwgar o liw sy’n gwneud i’r sawl sy’n edrych arno deimlo braidd yn anghyfforddus wrth edrych ar y golygfeydd.

Mae fy arddull diniwed a chyfrannau afreolaidd a chythryblus yn fwriadol ac rwyf am i’m gwaith fyw rhwng byd real ac afreal sy’n cynnwys lliwiau afrealistig ac annisgwyl sy’n gwrthgyferbynnu â natur erchyll fy mhwnc. Mae awyrgylch ‘tu ôl i ddrysau caeëdig’ y tu allan i’r tai yn ddifyr ac yn rhyfeddol, lleoliad domestig fel man cudd a chyfrinachol. Rwyf am ddal y cysyniad ‘reality is stranger than fiction’. Mae’r dulliau fforensig a ddefnyddir gan wyddonwyr yn eu gwaith yn archwilio olion dynol a gaiff eu gadael yn lle y cyflawnwyd troseddau o ddiddordeb i mi ynghyd â sut mae’r naratif hwn o ymchwilio microsgopig o’r hyn a gafodd ei esgeuluso yn gallu cynnig cyfoeth o wybodaeth ac yn helpu i roi llais i’r meirw a sicrhau cyfiawnder o bosibl. Mae fy ngwaith yn fy atgoffa bod ein cof yn ffaeledig ac annibynadwy, ac y dylem gwestiynu’r byd o’n cwmpas.

My artwork was initially inspired by the rave scene which is usually an intense environment of music, colour and lights. I decided to recreate the feelings that my experience evoked, with the use of illuminative acrylics and spray paints on canvas. As spray painting...

Our species has become increasingly disconnected from nature. I focus on landscapes of personal significance and/or landscapes that have been disrupted by industrial use. Materials from these sites (often rocks, muds, and bricks) are used through a process-orientated...

Non-linear narratives such as unreliable memories, leaky dreams and deja vu are a central reference within my practice. I address the structure of these forms of narrative using repetition, replication and iterations of time. My work is largely sculptural, using...

Exploring the fragmentation of memory through the physicality of found objects and the spoken word, my work has become an archive of my family history. Due to the archival nature of my work, I replicate ways of preserving my objects through the attentiveness of their...

In my current practice I am concerned with the objectivity and phenomenology of colour. Through using media such as light and coloured acetate, my present work is intentionally focused and uncluttered, allowing colour to be considered as a singularity without any...

With a love for colour my work addresses form and shape and the impact this has on a space. I am demonstrating how the use of bright colour can create maximum optical impact. I’m interested in pattern and repetition to create a visual aesthetic whilst whilst working...
