Hannah Way

BA (Hons) Artist Designer Maker

My ethos centres around humour, play and satire, with the aim of capturing the spontaneity and sincerity of humanity and society. I believe that ceramic artefacts can represent the often unnoticed social and cultural expression of the everyday. I also believe that traditional ceramic processes, in conjunction with film photography, can subvert and investigate the nuances of contemporary society, and celebrate the humble joy of social interactions.

In daily encounters my inspiration is taken from a diverse group of characters fondly named ‘The Baby Boys’ as they playfully interact with one another. Capturing some of these moments myself not only through film but also in the expressionist approach I take to sculpture, with a focus on creating an atmosphere that was felt at the time the photograph was taken.
Within the hidden process of developing my own film I’m enabled to discover moments of spontaneous conversions with myself and the camera before me. By Illustrating the photos further into my own composition- transitioning the two-dimensional back into the three dimensional, I can create a larger moment, meticulously placing each captured piece to create a combination of separate minds in a bigger picture. The ceramic sculptures make the fleeting moments I’ve captured realized in the form of the social arrangements I have pieced together which, from a perspective standpoint will align to form the physicalized composition of a photo.

Sail fy ethos yw hiwmor, chwarae a dychan gyda’r nod o ddal natur ddigymell a didwylledd dynoliaeth a chymdeithas. Rydw i’n credu y gall arteffactau seramig gynrychioli mynegiant cymdeithasol a diwylliannol yr arferol sydd yn ddisylw yn fynych. Rydw i hefyd yn credu y gall prosesau seramig traddodiadol ar y cyd â ffotograffiaeth ffilm danseilio ac ymchwilio i nawsau’r gymdeithas gyfoes a dathlu llawenydd gostyngedig rhyngweithiadau cymdeithasol.

Daeth fy ysbrydoliaeth o grŵp amrywiol o gymeriadau o’r enw ‘The Baby Boys’ wrth iddyn nhw ryngweithio gyda’i gilydd. Gan ddal yr eiliadau hyn fy hun nid yn unig drwy ffilm ond hefyd yn y dull mynegiannol dw i’n mynd ati i gerflunio gyda ffocws ar greu awyrgylch a brofwyd ar adeg tynnu’r ffilm. O fewn y broses gudd o ddatblygu fy ffilm fy hun rydw i’n gallu darganfod eiliadau o sgyrsiau digymell rhyngof fi fy hun a’r camera o fy mlaen. Drwy ddarluniadau’r lluniau yn fy ngwaith – trawsnewid y ddau-ddimensiwn yn ôl i 3 dimensiwn, gallaf greu moment fwy, gan osod pob darn yn ofalus i greu cyfuniad o feddyliau ar wahân mewn llun mwy. Mae’r cerfluniau seramig yn cyfleu’r ennyd byr hwnnw yr ydw wedi’u dal, a hynny ar ffurf trefniant cymdeithasol sydd, o safbwynt persbectif, yn cydredeg i ffurfio cyfansoddiad corfforol o lun.
