BA (Hons) Illustration

My current project looks into the story of St Dwynwen, a Welsh princess who became a saint- the welsh patron St of Lovers. She is celebrated throughout wales on the 25th of January. I was interested in this story after hearing about St Dwynwens day and doing some research into it and I wanted to tell the story of St Dwynwens life as i think it’s a less well known story. I hope to create atmosphere and nostalgia by capturing a moment in time.

My inspiration is constantly evolving but I generally have a strong focus on colour and the natural world. I’ve always been enthusiastic about putting together colour palettes and I’m currently exploring using limited colours, learning just how effective singular colours can be. I take a playful approach to colour using it to set the tone of a piece, to convey emotion and nostalgia.

My illustrations are often created by painting individual elements of a piece traditionally and arranging them into a composition digitally. This allows my to be more playful in my work as I can create a piece including different elements that I may or may not include in my final outcome. I have particular interest in editorial illustration and design and I always love having an editorial project to do. I also hope to keep expanding my portfolio of work to reach new audiences as I believe that illustration should be everywhere and accessible to all.

Mae fy mhrosiect presennol yn edrych ar stori Santes Dwynwen, tywysoges Gymreig a ddaeth yn sant – nawddsant cariadon Cymru. Mae hi’n cael ei dathlu ledled Cymru ar 25 Ionawr. Roedd gen i ddiddordeb yn y stori ar ôl clywed am ddiwrnod Santes Dwynwen a gwneud rhywfaint o ymchwil ac roeddwn i eisiau adrodd hanes bywyd Santes Dwynwen gan fy mod yn credu ei bod yn stori lai adnabyddus. Rwy’n gobeithio creu awyrgylch a hiraeth drwy gipio eiliad mewn amser.

Mae fy ysbrydoliaeth yn esblygu’n gyson ond yn gyffredinol mae gen i ffocws cryf ar liw a’r byd naturiol. Rydw i wedi bod yn frwdfrydig ynghylch paletau lliw erioed ac ar hyn o bryd rwy’n archwilio defnyddio lliwiau cyfyngedig, gan ddysgu pa mor effeithiol y gall lliwiau unigol fod. Mae gen i agwedd chwareus at liw gan ei ddefnyddio i osod naws darn, i gyfleu emosiwn a hiraeth.

Caiff fy narluniau eu creu’n aml drwy beintio elfennau unigol o ddarn yn draddodiadol a’u trefnu’n gyfansoddiad yn ddigidol. Mae hyn yn caniatáu i mi fod yn fwy chwareus yn fy ngwaith gan y gallaf greu darn sy’n cynnwys gwahanol elfennau y gallaf eu cynnwys neu beidio yn fy nghynnyrch terfynol. Mae gen i ddiddordeb arbennig mewn darlunio a dylunio golygyddol ac rydw i wrth fy modd bob amser yn cael prosiect golygyddol i’w wneud. Rwy’n gobeithio parhau i ehangu fy mhortffolio gwaith hefyd i gyrraedd cynulleidfaoedd newydd gan fy mod i’n credu y dylai darlunio fod ym mhobman ac yn hygyrch i bawb.
