The brief required us to design a six storey multi-use building, which will be located at Friars Point in the seaside resort of Barry Island. The ground and first floor would consist of a mixture of offices and workshops, whilst the remaining floors are dedicated to a mix of one- & two-bedroom apartments. The brief highlighted key requirements for the proposal, including taking maximum advantage of the site, to demonstrate best practice in sustainable and ecological design, and to demonstrate high levels of technical competence.

Climate change is an important issue for me, so after an analysis of the site, I took advantage of the sites exposed location and added low-zero carbon technologies and techniques such as PV panels and natural ventilation. I also took the opportunity to add Green Roofs and Living Walls to the building, which helps improve local air quality, improves thermal performance, and will absorb carbon dioxide to help offset the environmental impact the building may have.

The addition of planting on the external façade will help offset any lost during construction. It will provide occupants with an opportunity to connect with nature and will deliver biodiversity to the site. The building has been positioned to provide as much natural light as possible to the structure and allow occupants stunning views of Barry Island and the surrounding area.

Roedd y brîff yn gofyn i ni ddylunio adeilad aml-ddefnydd chwe llawr, wedi’i leoli ar Drwyn y Brodyr, yn nhref glan môr Ynys y Barri. Byddai’r llawr gwaelod a’r llawr cyntaf yn cynnwys cymysgedd o swyddfeydd a gweithdai, a gweddill y lloriau yn cynnig cymysgedd o fflatiau un a dwy lofft. Amlygodd y brîff ofynion allweddol y cynnig, yn cynnwys manteisio i’r eithaf ar y safle, dangos arfer gorau o ran dylunio cynaliadwy ac ecolegol, ac arddangos lefelau uchel o gymhwysedd technegol.

Mae newid yn yr hinsawdd o bwys mawr i mi, felly ar ôl dadansoddi’r safle, manteisiais ar leoliad agored y safle i ychwanegu technolegau a thechnegau carbon isel a di-garbon fel paneli solar ffotofoltaig ac awyru naturiol. Bachais ar y cyfle hefyd i ychwanegu Toeau Gwyrdd a Waliau Byw i’r adeilad, sy’n helpu i wella ansawdd yr aer yn lleol, yn gwella perfformiad thermol, ac yn amsugno carbon deuocsid i helpu i wrthbwyso effaith amgylcheddol posibl yr adeilad.

Bydd ychwanegu plannu ar y ffasâd allanol yn helpu i wneud iawn am unrhyw blanhigion a gollwyd yn ystod y gwaith adeiladu. Bydd yn rhoi cyfle i ddeiliaid gysylltu â natur a bydd yn cyflwyno bioamrywiaeth i’r safle. Mae’r adeilad wedi’i osod fel ei fod yn cyfleu cymaint o olau naturiol ag sy’n bosibl i’r strwythur, ac er mwyn caniatáu i ddeiliaid fwynhau’r golygfeydd godidog o Ynys y Barri a’r ardal gyfagos.
