Events
I present transitional events, hybrids of physical and emotional experience concerned with states of crisis and transformation. There is a deep connection with the infinite and interconnected elements of natural and urban landscapes, in abstraction, they mutate into reflections of the unknowable.
The paintings suggest a liminal, in-between space preceding a threshold event, in many works the paint becomes a structurally ambivalent mass, created through repeated negation and re-application of paint. Although unintentionally seductive, areas of active paint appear as blooms of colour moving into existence, suggesting a revelation of things hidden. This was however not a conscious thought in the creation of the work, rather a unplanned outcome of the making.
Unthinking actions play a significant role in the creation of my paintings, through the act, the work becomes a source of ontological enquiry, where do we retreat when our reality is in flux or crisis?
The vertical stripes are used to create a sense of connectivity, they also represent the cyclical, carrying narrative from one work into the next, an implied constant.
I often reference landscapes that associate with spiritual events which I document through semi-representational drawing and photography on location. I take inspiration from many painting genres including, traditional Chinese landscape, abstract expressionism, English romantic, and provisional painting. I employ contemporary apocalyptic rhetoric and related philosophy forming a totality in the creation of works
