Early Morning
My art becomes actual through a process of absorption driven by a love for exploration, discovery, lucky accidents and unusual connections. I like to work instinctively as I find it can offer a wide scope for experimentation, progression and as a vehicle for inspiration. It’s an approach that means I can work freely, exploring the inherent qualities of a diverse range of materials and disciplines. My inspiration often comes from everyday objects and materials, their associations and their potential for renewal and to have new meanings.
The work in this exhibition is the result of an exploration into potential, where the promise of a new day and the road not yet travelled delivers a private time and space within which imagination and routine can mingle; stimulating our senses, inspiring our thoughts and prompting our actions. It can be a liminal time and space of suspended reality where anything is possible, framed by the past and unrestricted by a future.
Although each start to a new day is different, it’s often regulated by old habits and routines. In the half-light between night and day, negative and positive emotions, behaviours and thoughts can co-exist, indeterminate and honest.
I have aimed to distil a sense of promise and infinite possibilities into an appreciation of the moment, the day-break song from the blackbird and the first cup of tea of a morning.
