Provisionality is the emblematic way of how I understand the world, life’s uncertainties and my ever changing surroundings. I use a method of representation and erasure to create a visual tension between abstraction and representation, figure and landscape and depth and flatness. I incorporate imagery from my daily life into my canvases: imagery from tobacco packets, graffiti textures and tattoo designs from my past experiences within the tattoo industry. I consider if I can offer a new aesthetic readily open to intellectual interpretation, uniting high art and popular culture and melding these disparate aesthetics to achieve a state of equilibrium on the surface of the canvas. My provocative juxtapositions prompt an exploration into the intangible relationships between the imagery, thereby permitting a closer relationship to ambiguous abstraction as the contents of the paintings are open to a range of meanings and associations in which has the effect of flattening high and low culture.

Tymoroldeb yw’r ffordd arwyddluniol sy’n dangos sut rwy’n deall y byd, pethau ansicr bywyd a’m hamgylchoedd innau sy’n bythol newid. Rwy’n defnyddio dull cynrychioli a dileu i greu tyndra gweledol rhwng yr haniaethol a’r cynrychiadol, rhwng ffigur a thirlun a rhwng dyfnder a gwastadrwydd. Rwy’n cynnwys delweddau o’m bywyd bob dydd yn fy nghynfasau: delweddau o becynnau tybaco, gweadeddau graffiti a dyluniadau tatw o’m profiadau yn y gorffennol yn y diwydiant tatw. Rwy’n ystyried fy mod yn gallu cynnig esthetig newydd a fydd yn hawdd ei ddehongli’n ddeallusol, gan uno celf uchel a diwylliant poblogaidd a chyfuno’r elfennau esthetig gwahanol i gael creu cyflwr o gydbwysedd ar wyneb y cynfas. Mae fy nghyfosodiadau pryfoclyd yn annog person i archwilio’r perthnasoedd annirnadwy sydd rhwng y delweddau, gan ganiatáu felly berthynas agosach â’r haniaethol amwys gan fod cynnwys y paentiadau yn agored i ystod o ystyron a chysylltiadau. Effaith hyn yw gwastatáu diwylliant uchel ac isel.

I have recently been exploring ideas related to the home and memory, and how they form identity. I am interested in how to defy the imperative to follow a linear structure in personal narrative and instead look for a more honest depiction of memory, which is itself...
