‘A People Destroyed’ is an interactive exhibit that endeavours to construct a narrative of the ongoing plight of China’s Uighur population underneath a brutal and authoritarian regime, in Xinjiang province.

The Chinese Communist Party is currently perpetrating one of the largest humanitarian crises in the modern world, as millions of ethnically Turkic Uighur Muslims, Kazakhs, and other minority groups face persecution based on their faith and culture. A cultural genocide is occurring in Xinjiang, under the guise that the government is fighting religious extremism. Due to China’s power and huge economic influence, this continues to be a story that has been supressed across the world’s media. The province has rapidly developed into a police state shrouded in secrecy.

This exhibit intertwines the narrative promoted by China with the far grimmer reality exposed through personal accounts and party leaks. The user must navigate a variety of newspaper-style spreads to discern the truth from President Xi Jinping’s propaganda and the actuality of events to create a ‘bigger picture’ of the crisis.

My aim is to tell the concealed story of these oppressed people and to show a physical manifestation of confusing and contradictory media rhetoric and propaganda. My work has been influenced by the focus on social design throughout our study, alongside a growing passion for editorial and printed matter. I hope that the resulting combination creates a lateral and effective approach which incorporates both contexts.

Mae ‘A People Destroyed’ yn arddangosyn rhyngweithiol sy’n ceisio adeiladu naratif o helynt barhaus poblogaeth Uighur Tsieina o dan gyfundrefn greulon ac awdurdodaidd yn nhalaith Xinjiang.

Ar hyn o bryd mae Plaid Gomiwnyddol Tsieina’n cyflawni un o argyfyngau dyngarol mwyaf y byd modern wrth i filiynau o Foslemiaid Uighur Twrcaidd, Casaciaid a grwpiau lleiafrifol eraill wynebu erledigaeth ar sail eu ffydd a diwylliant. Mae hil-laddiad diwylliannol yn digwydd yn Xinjiang, o dan y rhith bod y llywodraeth yn ymladd yn erbyn eithafiaeth grefyddol. Oherwydd pŵer a dylanwad economaidd enfawr Tsieina, mae hyn yn parhau i fod yn hanes sydd wedi’i wthio o’r neilltu gan gyfryngau’r byd. Mae’r dalaith wedi symud yn gyflym i fod yn wladwriaeth heddlu dan gyfrinach.

Mae’r arddangosyn hwn yn cyferbynnu’r naratif a hybir gan Dsieina gyda’r realiti llawer mwy tywyll a ddinoethir trwy hanesion personol a datgeliadau cyfrinachol o’r blaid. Mae’n rhaid i’r defnyddiwr lywio trwy amrywiaeth o erthyglau yn null papur newydd i ddod o hyd i’r gwirionedd o bropaganda Arlywydd Xi Jinping a newyddion am y digwyddiadau i greu ‘darlun ehangach’ o’r argyfwng.

Fy nod yw adrodd stori dan gêl y bobl hyn sydd wedi’u gormesu i ddangos arddangosiad go iawn o rethreg a propaganda dryslyd a chroesebol yn y cyfryngau. Dylanwadwyd ar fy ngwaith gan y ffocws ar ddylunio cymdeithasol trwy gydol ein hastudio ochr yn ochr ag angerdd cynyddol dros ddeunydd golygyddol a phrintiedig. Rwy’n gobeithio y bydd y cyfuniad terfynol yn creu dull ochrol ac effeithiol sy’n ymgorffori’r ddau gyd-destun.
