The heart of the Black Artist’s ideology is the dedication of his heart to the cultural liberation of his people. It is in this sense that Black art is decidedly functional, politically and spiritually, and it is not to be confused by the alienation concept of “art for art’s sake” rather than art for people’s sake” – B. I describe my practice as visual narration. I always aim to tell a story and bring my audience into a different experience, whether through portraiture, landscape painting or installation. Through the work I hope to convey different emotions and sensations and create an open platform for personal exploration and discussion.

My current focus is challenging perceptions of racial and cultural identity. Issues of racism and stereotyping have permeated Western art and remain present in contemporary media and society. This is most evident in mainstream standardisation of beauty, especially in music and cinema.

Growing up in in England has given me a Western perspective /training in art and painting, yet my practice has also been significantly informed by Ghanaian culture alongside black artists and voices. As artists we have a huge impact on society and with this comes a responsibility to use our voices to connect with others. Re-appropriation enables me to combine traditional Western methods of painting with imagery and influences from my subjects’ cultural backgrounds. This enables me to create fully informed representations of people, their true identities and life stories, free from bias, standardisation and stereotypes.

Rwy’n disgrifio fy ngwaith fel naratif gweledol. Rydw i bob amser yn ceisio adrodd stori a chyflwyno fy nghynulleidfa i brofiad gwahanol, boed drwy bortreadau, peintio tirluniau neu osodiadau. Drwy’r gwaith rwy’n gobeithio cyfleu gwahanol emosiynau a theimladau a chreu llwyfan agored ar gyfer archwilio personol a thrafodaeth.

Ar hyn o bryd rwy’n canolbwyntio ar herio canfyddiadau o hunaniaeth hiliol a diwylliannol. Mae problemau hiliaeth a stereoteipio yn treiddio drwy gelf Orllewinol ac yn dal i fod yn bresennol mewn cyfryngau a chymdeithas fodern. Mae hyn i’w weld amlycaf yn y ffordd mae harddwch yn cael ei safoni mewn cyfryngau prif ffrwd, yn enwedig mewn cerddoriaeth ac yn y sinema.

Mae cael fy magu yn Lloegr wedi rhoi safbwynt/hyfforddiant Gorllewinol i mi mewn celf a pheintio, ond mae diwylliant Ghana ac artistiaid a lleisiau pobl dduon wedi dylanwadu’n sylweddol ar fy ngwaith hefyd. Fel artistiaid rydym yn cael effaith fawr ar gymdeithas ac mae gennym gyfrifoldeb i ddefnyddio’n lleisiau i gysylltu ag eraill. Mae adfeddiannu yn fy ngalluogi i gyfuno dulliau peintio Gorllewinol traddodiadol gyda lluniau a dylanwadau o gefndiroedd diwylliannol y bobl sy’n ymddangos yn fy ngwaith. Mae hyn yn fy ngalluogi i greu cynrychioliadau gwybodus llawn o bobl, eu gwir hunaniaeth a straeon eu bywyd, yn ddiduedd, heb ei safoni a heb stereoteipiau.
