BA (Hons) Fine Art

My present practise revolves around portraiture and capturing the likeness of people through monochromatic mediums. I aim to present specific, personal narratives under the guise of well-known principles or beliefs. I have found expressing my art this way exerts a sense of familiarity to the works even if the narratives shown do not resonate on a subjective level. Composing my work in this way serves as a reflection into some personal issues, so even if the aesthetic is what catches the attention, the images are layered enough to entice a deeper appreciation and a more grounded understanding if prompted.

Using portraits as a conduit for something else means I am able to take the subject’s likeness, exaggerate features and mould the faces into ideas. My work currently is about depicting the “Seven Cardinal Sins”. At a superficial level, the exaggerated features and minimal colours chose will represent the individual sins as personified beings. However, because I am basing these characters on the likeness of actual people, I am emphasising the idea that while the severity of these sins is very much figurative, they exist within all of us whether we would care to admit it or not. Using an acknowledged proverb to address narratives through depiction, allows the audience to interpret each in their own way whilst remaining under the umbrella of the proverbial.

Mae fy ymarfer cyfredol yn troi o gwmpas portreadau a dal tebygrwydd pobl drwy gyfryngau unlliw. Fy mwriad yw cyflwyno naratif penodol, personol dan ogwydd egwyddorion neu gredoau cyfarwydd. Rwyf wedi canfod bod mynegi fy nghelfyddyd fel hyn yn rhoi ymdeimlad o’r cyfarwydd i’r gweithiau hyd yn oed os nad yw’r naratifau a ddangosir yn atseinio ar lefel oddrychol. Mae cyfansoddi fy ngwaith yn y fath fodd yn gweithredu fel adlewyrchiad i rai materion personol, felly hyd yn oed os mai’r estheteg sy’n dal sylw, mae’r delweddau mor haenol nes ennyn gwerthfawrogiad dyfnach a dealltwriaeth gadarnach o gael ei annog.

Golyga defnyddio portreadau fel sianel ar gyfer rhywbeth arall fy mod yn gallu cymryd tebygrwydd gwrthrych, gorliwio nodweddion a mowldio’r wynebau’n syniadau. Mae fy ngwaith cyfredol yn ymwneud â phortreadu’r “Saith Pechod Marwol”. Ar lefel arwynebol, mae’r nodweddion sydd wedi’u gorliwio a lliwiau minimal a ddewisir yn cynrychioli’r pechodau unigol fel bodau wedi’u personoli. Serch hynny, am fy mod yn seilio’r cymeriadau yma ar y tebygrwydd â phobl go iawn, rwy’n pwysleisio’r syniad, er mai ffigurol iawn yw difrifoldeb y pechodau yma, eu bod yn bodoli y tu mewn i ni bob un p’un a ydym yn dymuno cyfaddef hynny ai peidio. Drwy ddefnyddio dihareb gydnabyddedig i fynd i’r afael â naratif drwy ddarluniau, rhoddir cyfle i’r gynulleidfa ddehongli yn eu ffyrdd eu hunain gan barhau dan gysgod yr ymbarél ddiarhebol.

I have recently been exploring ideas related to the home and memory, and how they form identity. I am interested in how to defy the imperative to follow a linear structure in personal narrative and instead look for a more honest depiction of memory, which is itself...
