Kara Hughes

BA (Hons) Interior Design

I have always had a passion for art and design. Ever since I was a child, I’ve always known what industry I’d like to have a career in. I have always considered many different elements of the art and design field, interior design being one of them. Every time I’ve stepped into a space, I’ve always appreciated how things are arranged and how the space is utilised, regardless of the type of space. I like to think about how designers and individuals have chosen to use colour schemes, soft furnishings, lighting, and display, within the design. As a designer, I am not drawn to following design trends. Instead, I want to encourage individuals to explore a one-of-a-kind design that speaks to them personally, as well as a design that is sustainable, inclusive, and accessible to all. I like to believe that I’m able to help people choose the right design for them and help them find out exactly what they’d like from the design.

In addition to interior design, I’m keen on becoming an art and design teacher. I believe I have a creative eye and can display a wide range of artistic abilities and approaches. I value inspiring others, and I feel I can help students develop their future career aspirations, whilst also expanding their imaginations. My undergraduate degree, I believe, has aided me in developing the skills necessary to become a competent teacher, which is why, after graduation, I’m considering pursuing a PGCE.

Mae gen i angerdd am gelf a dylunio erioed. Ers pan oeddwn i’n blentyn, rydw i wedi gwybod pa ddiwydiant yr hoffwn i gael gyrfa ynddo. Rydw i wedi ystyried llawer o wahanol elfennau o’r maes celf a dylunio erioed, ac mae dylunio mewnol yn un ohonyn nhw. Bob tro rydw i wedi camu i mewn i ofod, rydw i wedi gwerthfawrogi sut mae pethau’n cael eu trefnu a sut mae’r gofod yn cael ei ddefnyddio, waeth pa fath o ofod ydyw. Rwy’n hoffi meddwl am sut mae dylunwyr ac unigolion wedi dewis defnyddio cynlluniau lliw, dodrefn meddal, goleuadau ac arddangos, yn y dyluniad. Fel dylunydd, dydy dilyn ffasiynau dylunio ddim yn apelio ataf. Yn hytrach, rydw i am annog unigolion i archwilio dyluniad unigryw sy’n apelio atyn nhw’n bersonol, yn ogystal â dyluniad sy’n gynaliadwy, yn gynhwysol ac yn hygyrch i bawb. Rwy’n hoffi credu fy mod i’n gallu helpu pobl i ddewis y dyluniad cywir iddyn nhw a’u helpu i ddarganfod beth yn union yr hoffen nhw ei gael o’r dyluniad.

Yn ogystal â dylunio mewnol, rwy’n awyddus i ddod yn athro celf a dylunio. Rwy’n credu bod gen i lygad greadigol a gallaf ddangos amrywiaeth eang o alluoedd a dulliau artistig. Rwy’n gweld gwerth mewn ysbrydoli eraill, ac rwy’n teimlo y galla i helpu myfyrwyr i ddatblygu eu dyheadau gyrfa yn y dyfodol, wrth iddyn nhw ehangu eu dychymyg hefyd. Rwy’n credu bod fy ngradd israddedig wedi fy helpu i ddatblygu’r sgiliau sydd eu hangen i ddod yn athro cymwys, a dyna pam rwy’n ystyried dilyn TAR ar ôl graddio.

Unlike some, I cannot say that I always knew Interior Design was the route I was destined to go down. While I have always had a keen eye and a strong love for artistic design, for me, designing a space seemed like more of a hobby rather than a job that I could pursue...

I’m not one for grand philosophical ideas through design that will ultimately end up being someones living or work space. As a designer all I really aspire to do is create something that is of value to the person using that bit of design whether it’s a space or a...

What interior design means to me is creating a space that reaches its purpose’s full potential. Creating a successful interior design is to produce designs that are easily understood, have functionality and have recognisable aesthetics. When approaching an interior...

The intrigue within me in relation to creating inclusive dimensions derives from being well travelled and primarily being in close contact with disabled children. In 2015 I volunteered for an organisation called Allsorts in Stroud, aiming to provide fun activities for...

To me, design is about working with others to find solutions to their problems. It is only by getting onto someone else’s level and experiencing their journey and needs can one create an experience that doesn’t make assumptions. It is how we use design as a tool to...

I approach my projects with the goal of giving the structure a function that is identifiable and related to its users through its internal design, which converts the space into a beautiful environment for the intended experience while also delivering positive and...
