Pont ar Daf Visitor and Outdoor Pursuit Centre

The Pont-ar-Daf Visitor and Outdoor Pursuit Centre is purpose to situate at the base of Pen-y-Fan walk alongside of the A470 trunk road to provide pit stop point for hill walkers with Education facilitates and accommodations.

The design of the Pont-ar-Daf visitor and outdoor pursuit centre is inspired by unique local culture in its nature. The concept research on the local value is resulted with Welsh Hawkweed (Hieracium cambricum) and most significant mountains of the Brecon beacons topography. The main idea was to assemble the patterns of the most significant three high peaks (West-East Black Mountains and pen-y-fan) of the topography and unify them with the Welsh Hawkweed structure and re-interpret them into an architectural concept to create a living environment for the Visitors. The concept then sculptured into function and cladded with local materials. The design also aimed to optimise use of renewable energy resources and being flexible to allow adaption to other purposes in the future with minimal environmental impact.

The Visitor Centre is comprised of three district buildings which are Visitors Welcoming space, Educational block and Residential block that accommodate up to 60 people. The Buildings connected with glass roof enclosed walkway. The material palette of Building mimics the elegant landscape and waistband the environmental conditions.

The design is an interpretation of the site’s value that brings out to inside, echoing the theme while providing minimalist modern aspects.
