Leigh Hedd Roberts

BA (Hons) Fine Art

I would describe my art as confessional; I take inspiration from my life events and feelings surrounding these experiences, I translate this through my work. I see my practice as a portal from my life in which I can lose myself and explore the deepest truths of my emotions. I consider my work to be a response to these events and this, combined with the creative process, is both ritualistic and intimate.

My core focus within this is portraiture, often through text. I have adopted a more simplistic approach with the aim of expressing these events and delicate feelings as they are. I have a keen interest in exploring portraiture by working with statements others have said to or about me and allowing these statements to speak for themselves. My work intends to expose or advertise these as well as myself through sharing some of my most intimate thoughts and feelings. Often, this includes parts of me of which I am ashamed.

By using opposing colour palettes and/or materials against forthright texts, my objective is to mislead or lure the viewer and induce subtle discomfort or awkwardness through the subject matter.

I am a multidisciplinary artist although, of late, I have been mainly focussing on print and textiles. However, I have been known to work with other disciplines such as collage, sculpture and performance/videography.

Rwy’n disgrifio fy nghelf fel cyffesol; Rwy’n hoffi cael fy ysbrydoli gan ddigwyddiadau fy mywyd a’r teimladau sy’n gysylltiedig â’r profiadau yma, a chyfleu hynny drwy fy ngwaith. Rwy’n gweld fy ymarfer fel porth o fy mywyd lle gallaf ymgolli ac archwilio gwirioneddau dyfnaf fy emosiynau. Ystyriaf fy ngwaith fel ymateb i’r digwyddiadau yma ac mae hyn, ar y cyd â’r broses greadigol, yn ddefodol ac yn agos-atoch.

Fy ffocws sylfaenol yn hyn o beth yw portreadau, yn aml drwy destun. Rwyf wedi mabwysiadu ymagwedd fwy syml gyda’r bwriad o fynegi’r digwyddiadau yma a theimladau tyner fel y maent. Mae gennyf ddiddordeb mawr mewn archwilio portreadau drwy weithio gyda datganiadau a ddywedwyd wrthyf gan neu amdanaf gan eraill a chaniatáu i’r datganiadau hynny siarad drostynt eu hunain. Bwriad fy ngwaith yw datgelu neu hysbysebu’r rhain yn ogystal â mi fy hun drwy rannu rhai o’r meddyliau a’r teimladau mwyaf agos-atoch. Yn aml mae hyn yn cynnwys rhannau ohonof sy’n codi cywilydd arnaf.

Drwy ddefnyddio paletau lliw gwrthgyferbyniol a/neu ddeunydd yn erbyn testunau di-flewyn-ar-dafod, fy mwriad yw camarwain neu ddenu’r gwyliwr a pheri anghysur neu letchwithdod cynnil drwy’r gwrthrych.

Rwy’n artist amlddisgyblaethol er fy mod, yn ddiweddar, wedi bod yn canolbwyntio’n bennaf ar brint a thecstiliau. Serch hynny, rwyf wedi gweithio mewn cyfryngau eraill megis collage, cerflunwaith a pherfformiad/fideograffeg.

Our species has become increasingly disconnected from nature. I focus on landscapes of personal significance and/or landscapes that have been disrupted by industrial use. Materials from these sites (often rocks, muds, and bricks) are used through a process-orientated...

Non-linear narratives such as unreliable memories, leaky dreams and deja vu are a central reference within my practice. I address the structure of these forms of narrative using repetition, replication and iterations of time. My work is largely sculptural, using...

Exploring the fragmentation of memory through the physicality of found objects and the spoken word, my work has become an archive of my family history. Due to the archival nature of my work, I replicate ways of preserving my objects through the attentiveness of their...

In my current practice I am concerned with the objectivity and phenomenology of colour. Through using media such as light and coloured acetate, my present work is intentionally focused and uncluttered, allowing colour to be considered as a singularity without any...

With a love for colour my work addresses form and shape and the impact this has on a space. I am demonstrating how the use of bright colour can create maximum optical impact. I’m interested in pattern and repetition to create a visual aesthetic whilst whilst working...
