My work deconstructs the ordinary notion of a car engine. I dismantle the engine in order to establish an understanding, and make visible what the human eye does not normally see.

I shine light on the complexity and beauty components a standard engine possesses, and present a deeper understanding of what is generally overlooked. From the inner workings of the engine block and the complexity of the cylinder head, to the ancillary components, I document the workings of the engine in a dispersed, yet organised manner. The work also features linear elements and drawings in order to give the viewer an appreciation of what we associate with the concept of an ‘Engine’ but without clear understanding.

The essential components will consist of the block, cylinder head, carburettor, starter motor and belt pulley. Each of these components is made up of a multitude of parts which I present as individuals. The parts in themselves possess the quality of a readymade, however combined with the diagrams they offer the audience something like an autopsy, enabling them to interpret how all the parts come together to make a running engine. As with a Haynes manual, I show the audience an exploded view of the engine. Nothing is hidden; the viewer can follow each step of the process used to arrive at the final dismantled engine.

I have recently been exploring ideas related to the home and memory, and how they form identity. I am interested in how to defy the imperative to follow a linear structure in personal narrative and instead look for a more honest depiction of memory, which is itself...
