Over the years, as a society, we have lost touch with what it means to have nurturing bonds and longevity with our belongings. Caught in a wave of disposability, and cheap manufacture, our modern lifestyles are having a detrimental effect on the environment. There is an enormous divide between the end user with the material and manufacturing origins. This makes it all too easy to be disjointed from the personal responsibility we each hold to make conscious decisions that follow our ethics and principles.

Through my work, I aim to offer an alternative, sourcing the raw materials from my local area as a means to create sustainable and ethical work. I attempt to highlight and leave evidence of this to try and encourage people to reconnect with their own natural environments.

I reflect and learn from traditional, low impact craft techniques that were once relied upon, highlighting the aspects of our culture that mass production has diminished. Keeping my forms simple, I place emphasis on the unique and individual properties that the materials hold, with the aim that the viewer will appreciate their value, having knowledge and evidence of their journey. My hope is that anyone who comes into the possession of my work will be able to form a sense of respect and care for the object, and that it will act as inspiration to consider other belongings in a similar way

Dros y blynyddoedd, fel cymdeithas, rydym ni wedi colli cysylltiad â’r hyn y mae’n ei olygu i gael cysylltiadau sy’n meithrin a hirhoedledd gyda’n heiddo. Gan ein bod wedi’n dal mewn ton o dafladwyedd a gweithgynhyrchu rhad mae ein ffordd fodern o fyw yn cael effaith andwyol ar yr amgylchedd. Mae rhaniad enfawr rhwng y defnyddiwr terfynol â tharddiad y deunydd a’r broses weithgynhyrchu wreiddiol. Mae hyn yn ei gwneud hi’n rhy hawdd o lawer i fod wedi’n datgymalu oddi wrth y cyfrifoldeb personol sydd gan bob un ohonom i wneud penderfyniadau ymwybodol sy’n dilyn ein moeseg a’n hegwyddorion.

Trwy fy ngwaith, fy nod yw cynnig dewis arall, gan ddod o hyd i’r deunyddiau crai yn fy ardal leol fel ffordd o greu gwaith cynaliadwy a moesegol. Dwi’n ceisio tynnu sylw at hyn a gadael tystiolaeth i geisio annog pobl i ailgysylltu â’u hamgylcheddau naturiol eu hunain.

Dwi’n adlewyrchu ac yn dysgu o dechnegau crefft traddodiadol, effaith isel y dibynnwyd arnynt yn eu dydd, gan dynnu sylw at yr agweddau ar ein diwylliant y mae masgynhyrchu wedi’u lleihau. Gan gadw fy ffurfiau’n syml, dwi’n rhoi pwyslais ar y nodweddion unigryw ac unigol sydd gan y deunyddiau, gyda’r nod y bydd y gwyliwr yn gwerthfawrogi eu gwerth, o fod â gwybodaeth a thystiolaeth o’u taith. Fy ngobaith yw y bydd unrhyw un y mae fy ngwaith yn dod i’w dwylo yn gallu ffurfio ymdeimlad o barch a gofal am y gwrthrych, ac y bydd yn gweithredu fel ysbrydoliaeth i ystyried mathau eraill o eiddo mewn ffordd debyg.
